Have you recently bought an old Nintendo Switch? Here's how to update it for free

Nintendo recently updated the original Nintendo Switch with improvements like a better battery that adds an extra two hours of use.

But the new model looks just like the old one, so it's hard to tell which one you're buying when shopping online or in stores. We've already explained how to tell the difference here, but if you were one of the unlucky ones who bought the original switch on or after July 17, the same day that Nintendo announced the new switch, you can easily upgrade it.

Nintendo is offering free upgrades to the new model, according to Proving Ground, which Nintendo has confirmed by allowing NSPs. Redditor DarthMewtwo23 first showed up with the program, and another user said they were able to upgrade, too. So if you want to get the latest switch, here's how.

How to upgrade to a new Nintendo Switch for free

  1. First, find out if you bought a Nintendo Switch on or after July 17, 2019.
  2. Then go here to determine if you really purchased the original or the refurbished model.
  3. Next contact nintendo customer service by going here and entering information. Or, you can dial 1-800-55-3700 in the US (or 1-855-548-4693 if outside the US).
  4. When talking to a Nintendo customer representative, request a free upgrade.
  5. You may be asked to pay for the shipping cost of sending the old model back.

Note: This offer currently has only been confirmed valid for residents of the US and Canada, but it may be available elsewhere.

How long will this offer be available?

It's all very unclear at this point. Nintendo hasn't made an official announcement, but we've reached out to the company for more details and will update if we hear more. However, if you've recently bought an old switch, you might as well give Nintendo a challenge yourself to see if you can change it for free.
