Ghost of Tsushima: release date, trailers and news

First announced at 2017 Paris Games Week, Ghost of Tsushima is a brand new IP from DYH that will be exclusive to Sony playstation 4.

Despite the slap in the face of the largely known, infamous game, the developer departs quite substantially from the infamous formula with this new game. Talking so long of high-rise cities and neon superpowers, Ghost of Tsushima will be a historical open-world adventure that will take players back to feudal Japan.

We haven't heard much about Ghost of Tsushima since it was revealed at E3 2018, but we're looking forward to Sony to shed more light on the PS4 exclusive soon.

Ghost of Tsushima release date

While we know that the development of the spirit of Tsushima is ongoing and we've seen some gameplay footage, there hasn't been the slightest idea of a release date just yet.

News about Ghost of Tsushima has been pretty thin on the ground since the E3 gameplay show in 2018. However, according to tweets by Cat News editor Jason Schreier (and spotted on PlayStation Lifestyle), Ghost of Tsushima in early 2020 along with The Last of Us Part 2, George R.R. Martin, is rumored to be FromSoftware game, unexpected and Ubisoft title, Final Fantasy 7 episode remake, and “Maybe” Cyberpunk 2077.

Schreyer claims that this information comes from his sources and, thanks to his connections in the gaming industry and a history of accurate leaks, we partly believe the rumors.

Ghost of Tsushima trailer

The prefix has shown us more of the ghost of Tsushima than ever in its history. E3 2018 conferences with long gameplay debut. The trailer shows a huge open world that almost looks like a painting with a soaring atmospheric soundtrack.

We see our samurai challenge the Mongol invaders in a style of combat that reminded us of Assassin's Creed. But like the front and direct combat, there will be an emphasis on stealth with players using the element of surprise so as not to be outnumbered.

Before that, we saw a trailer that was released during Paris Games Week.

Although it was captured in the game engine, it's not great in terms of gameplay. What it does show, however, is the world of the game we'll be playing in and it's understandable that the kick is aimed at a stunning aesthetic.

You can watch it for yourself below:

It didn't focus on game footage or gameplay, but there was also an instructive Team B for the PSX with several members of the game's development team.

PS5 exclusive?

According to an 'internal email leak' from Sony (and posted on NeoGaf), the PS5 will be unveiled at the 'PlayStation Meeting 2020' event on February 12, 2020. This meeting is rumored to aim to showcase 'the future of the Sony PlayStation to the world'. ".

The same 'leaked' internal email stating that Ghost of Tsushima will be a PS5 exclusive.

It's worth taking these rumors with a huge pinch of salt as it has never been confirmed that this is an official internal email.

In response to a request for comment, a spokesman for Sony said: "We do not comment on rumors and speculation."

It will still be on PS4

Information about Ghost of Tsushima is hard enough to find these days and the latest job posting for a storytelling writer on the game has had some fans worried that Banned Reception will be releasing its new IP on the all-talked PS5 better than PS4.

However, it looks like Sony is putting that hassle to bed, confirming in a presentation (via pictures and screenshots) that it will continue to be committed to PS4 for the next three years with "an outstanding roster of exclusive AAA games yet to come." These games include upcoming exclusives The Last of Us 2, Death Stranding and Ghost of Tsushima, as indicated by the game's imagery on the PS4 slide that took place as part of the presentation.

That's not to say that Ghost of Tsushima won't play on PS5 though - there's a lot of talk about backwards compatibility and it's likely that the game will fluctuate between generations, taking players from their current console to the next one. If you're not going to be ready to jump into the next generation though, don't worry - it looks like Ghost of Tsushima will still have that option.

Job Announcements

After news of very little for quite some time, in April 2019 Dykh posted a job opening for a writer's story about his Tsushima team spirit. This posting was not particularly reassuring to fans who believed the game was pretty far advanced in its development and suggested that any release date or news could be further away at that time.

The listing assignment (via Gamasutra) asks that applicants be willing to "create high-quality dialogue" and bring new ideas to the game's other storylines. However, it also suggests that the applicant must be able to write on a "fast deadline", which may mean that development is proceeding at a rapid pace and sudden impact may be looking to strengthen their existing teams with a new member being able to neatly tie down any secondary plot threads .

So far, no news comes from the blow itself, of course, this is all just speculation.

Protagonist Jin Sakai - but he's not alone

Ghost of Tsushima focuses on the samurai Jin Sakai, but you'll also be gathering allies like Archer Masako (who you may remember from the trailer).

It will be set in feudal Japan

As the game's trailer showed, the ghost of Tsushima will be set in 13th century Japan - the time of the Mongol invasion. In 1274 the Mongols made their first stop at Tsushima Island. You will play Jin, one of the last samurai on a devastated island, determined to crush the invasion and push the Mongols despite the fact that everything is stacked against him.

The game's art director, Jason Connell, stated in a recent PSX panel for the game that the team is taking an "inspired" approach to the game with the rig serving as a "starting point" for a completely original story.

Ghost of Tsushima

There will be an open world and you will play in third person

While it's very different from previous gut games, in many ways, Ghost of Tsushima will bear one resemblance to the infamous third-person perspective; this time players will take on the role of a samurai called Jin.

The game will have a huge open world. In particular, there will be large islands of Tsushima, located off the coast of Japan. Tsushima is a geographically diverse place, and the game's trailer shows that players will be able to travel from dense forests, to the Rocky Mountains, and cities filled with interesting characters.

Judging by the trailer footage, it looks like the player will be doing most of the landscapes bypassing on horseback.

Gameplay

We've seen very little gameplay, but given the setting and the main storyline, it has the potential to be interesting. Playing Samurai unsurprisingly means there will be both action and stealth elements, but there appear to be some plans in place to mix up the formula.

The samurai player to take control of, for example, is one of the last of its kind and, as a result, he was forced to shed the traditional samurai tactics and form a new way of fighting called the 'Way of the Spirit'.

Ghost of Tsushima

While we don't know what this path of the Spirit actually involves, we're interested because it's a completely new way of dealing with the necessity that there is only one samurai in front of an entire army. All of this together makes us think that there will be a lot of emphasis on tactical cunning and the use of enhanced (perhaps slightly supernatural) powers.

According to the game's listing on the New Zealand PlayStation Store, players will build the legend of the "Ghost" into a fairy tale "based on classic samurai stories."

There will be a choice of weapons

Naturally, weapons will be the main focus of this game and from the trailer we can see that there will be a wide range of them. Along with the traditional samurai katana, we also flaunt longbows, armored horses and lots of fire.

Ghost of Tsushima

The villain will wonder

Along with an intriguing hero, we're also expecting a substance villain. The player will face the Mongol Empire, known for his advanced horseback and archery skills as well as his ferocity.

The leader of this army will be the player's main enemy and the strike has been described by this leader as "uncomfortably intelligent assassins". How this will play out in the game is unclear, but it suggests an engaging storyline and dynamic hero/villain.

He could use Japanese dialogue

During the On panel for the PSX, the game's creative director Nate Fox asked the audience if they would be interested in playing the game with Japanese dialogue. After an applause that could not be mistaken for anything other than an affirmation, he stated that he "noted, thank you."

While this isn't a confirmation of anything, it does suggest that Ghost of Tsushima could very well be following the path of games like Nier: Automata entirely with Japanese dialogue along with English subtitles. This is no doubt a compliment to the efforts of the development team already clearly gone on research trips and asking for expert advice to achieve cultural authenticity.
