Most of us are familiar with the concept of the "North Star" - this is the star (currently Polaris) that helps travelers on their journeys...acting as a guide to keep them on track. And I firmly believe that we all have our own North Stars to act in a similar way.
When I talk about the "North Star", I mean the purpose of life. If you don't have one, you will be lost in life. But, if you have one, you will need a guiding light that keeps you firmly on the path to self-realization and success.
The purpose of life is exactly what it sounds like: the purpose that governs your life. For example, a famous athlete or musician, such as Michael Jordan or Ed Sheeran. Such people live to express their physical, mental and artistic abilities. They are passionate, energetic - and they know what they want to achieve in life. In other words, they follow the North Star.
So what about you? Have you discovered your purpose in life? Or are you just drifting aimlessly in the ocean of wishful thinking?
Why should we seek and accept the North Star
American author Denis Waitley said: “Winners are people with a specific purpose in life.”
In my experience, this is absolutely correct. The winners know what they want and they have a plan to get it.
If you're struggling to reach the level of success and happiness you want, you may need to take some time to find and hug your polar star (see the next section for help with that).
What benefits following your North Star give you? Well, first of all, you'll develop an almost super human ability to overcome and defeat the obstacles that come your way. This is because you will be fixated on the end goal and not let the little things stop you from getting there.
Let me give you an example of this:
You have decided that you want to learn electric guitar. Purchase the appropriate equipment (guitar, amp, wires, picks, etc.), and you subscribe to an online guitar tutorial site. During the first few weeks, everything is going well and you are making significant progress. However, unexpectedly, break the top string on the guitar while playing.
If you just happen to dabble in learning to play the guitar, then buying a new string - and learning how to match it to your guitar - might be enough to end your fledgling hobby. But, if you decide to become an accomplished guitarist, perhaps even a professional musician, then you certainly wouldn't let these obstacles stop you from making your tracks. On the contrary, you would most likely head straight to your nearest record store to pick up a few packs of replacement strings, watch YouTube videos on how to fit it in, and then continue with your playing! And, the next time you break a string, you won't miss a beat.
Now you see how the North Star (or big goal) can give you incredible energy, drive and tenacity?
It's the difference between a carefree attitude is an attitude. The ex will make you drift through life; the latter will keep you firmly on track to reach your desired destination.
The North Star is really just a big overall goal that will allow you to align small, achievable goals to it. For example, if you want to become a teacher, you need to pass your grades to get into college, then pass college exams, and then get relevant work experience, and then try to get a job. Without doing each of these steps, you will never do it in front of a class.
In other words, big goals only become docile when we break them down into smaller, smaller pieces. If you try to join a professional basketball team, for example, but you've never played before, you'd be laughed off the court. But, if you've been training hard, found a great coach, and had a burning desire to do it - the right door is probably open for you.
Let me ask you a question: Are you now feeling a little lost or unsure about your future?
If you do, don't worry. Once you start following the North Star, the other stars will begin to align for you! You will be able to keep your mind on the bigger picture and you will realize better actions to take in life to realize your dream. And, when you do this, your confidence will grow, you will be about your health. ((Psychology today: how a sense of purpose in life improves your health)) in a Psychological Science research article, it shows that having a life goal can even help you live longer.((Psychological Science: Life goal as a predictor of adult mortality)) You will also feel energized by your progress towards goals that really mean something to you.
5 Things That Can Help You Find Your North Star
So, are you ready to see your purpose?
If yes, then read on to find out five ways to help you do just that:
1. Get rid of mental limitations- you know what I mean, your inner voice that tells you that you are not good enough to do or achieve what you dream.
2. Ask yourself these questions: What do you like to do? What activities set your soul on fire? If you didn't have money, how would you spend your time?
3. Remember when you were a child — what things brought great satisfaction at that time? And there are things that you loved to do, but the adults told you to forget about them? …perhaps your dream is to become an actor, a ballerina or an astronaut?
4. Spending time in contemplation dwell on the answers to these questions for as long as you need. And, then wait for answers to come to mind. This may take minutes, hours, days or even weeks.
5. Listen to this feeling deep in your bones - you will instinctively know when your life goals are revealed to you. He will feel with you and he will also excite you to start taking action.
