New Audi RS7 gets redesign and 591bhp V8

Refreshed Audi Grand Sport Tourer features P8-inspired design elements and is capable of 189mph

Audi Sport has introduced the 591bhp second-generation RS7 Sportback, with a series of updates designed to make it a true 'Gran Turismo' on the ever-expanding range of RSs.

The new car, shown to the public for the first time at the Frankfurt Motor Show ahead of the one going on sale in early 2020, is based on the A7 Sportback, and serves as a sister model to the recently revealed RS6 Avant. It uses the same powertrain as the model, with a 4.0-liter turbocharged V8 and a 48V mild-hybrid unit to produce 591bhp and 590 lb/ft. Which results in a 0-62 mph time of 3,6 seconds and a top speed limited to 155 mph, or 189mph with the optional Dynamic Plus package.

On the PC7, now a makeover from the A7, with the hood, front doors and trunk only the body panels remained unchanged. At 1951mm wide, it's 40mm than A7. Exterior designer Francesco D'Amour told the car that the extra width "allowed us to show prestige in the car."

It features a redesigned gloss black Audi Sport single-frame honeycomb grille at the front, along with larger air vents inspired by those from the R8 supercar - both to make the styling more aggressive and because the engine requires extra cooling.

The rear of the car has an RS-specific bumper with a larger diffuser and is flanked by large oval chrome tailpipes, which D'Amore says are the largest ever seen on an Audi sports model.

LED lights are standard front and rear, a thin strip of light running the width of the trunk lid where the spoiler extends at speeds above 75 mph.

Typically, the RS7 comes with 21-inch cast aluminum wheels, with a 22-inch version available as an option. There's a choice of standard RS disc brakes, measuring 420mm at the front and 370mm at the rear, or ceramic brakes measuring 440mm and 370mm respectively.

The interior features a number of Audi Sport-specific design features, including an RS steering wheel with large aluminum paddles and Nappa leather sports seats as standard. Audi's virtual cockpit and head-up display system features a number of dedicated RS screens, including two RS modes under drive system selection.

The PC7 is available with a two- or three-seater rear seat, making it the first time the model has been available in a five-seater.

The mild hybrid drive is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission, with a mechanical center differential taking 40:60 power split radio as standard, although up to 70 power can be sent to the front wheels and up to 85 to the rear wheels automatically. when required to balance traction.

The PC7 features wheel-selective torque control, which can apply gentle braking to the inside wheels when cornering to enhance handling, with the optional Quattro Sport Differential providing even more control over torque distribution.

Drivers can adjust the noise level produced by the V8 engine using the Audi select drive system, while the optional RS sport exhaust system is designed to offer an even fuller 'sound'.

As with the RS6 Avant, the RS 7 mains has five-link front and rear axles and air suspension as standard. The car sits 20mm lower than the A7 results, and drops another 10mm at speeds above 75mph. An RS sports suspension with dynamic ride control is available as an option. The machine is available with optional dynamic all-wheel steering.

Pricing for the new RS 7 Sportback has yet to be set, but it will likely be an increase over the previous model's £87,610 tag.
