Apple iPhone xs comment: still extremely powerful

When Tim Cook showed the iPhone X in 2017, Apple's CEO said that this was the new direction for the iPhone, the foundation of the next 10 years. Fulfilling that promise, the iPhone XS and XS Max build on what the iPhone X started.

  • Apple iPhone 11 vs. iPhone 11 Pro vs. iPhone 11 Pro Max: Which Should You Buy?

Of course, we now have the new iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max too, although the xs series has been discontinued. That said, you can still pick it up, which is why we've updated our review. The iPhone 11 Pro is the natural successor.

Compared to last year's offers, the iPhone Xs is the one that sees the fewest changes. She looks the same, but does that mean she should be overlooked? It certainly shouldn't.

Solid design but better protected

  • New tougher glasses
  • IP68 make waterproofing
  • New stereo speakers

Being an "S" model, the display and design is the same as the model it directly replaces, the iPhone X. That edge-to-edge 5,8-inch OLED display is still stunning with the top "notch" that is packed with sensors the only design violation .

To say that Apple started the trend might be giving it too much credit, but it's certainly a proven Notch design and virtually all smartphones have an understatement. Here Apple hasn't changed the design at all, you'll still get the same glass with wireless charging, but a stainless steel core and the same overall quality look and feel.

There are design tweaks, or more accurately, build improvements on the iPhone xs, as well as improvements to wireless charging.

The iPhone XS is tougher than glass, which promises Apple's toughest glass yet - Apple's standard phrase means "better than before" - and the new IP68 waterproofing means you can drop your phone in water up to 2m for 30 minutes without damage. You should be able to mess around with it and into the pool without fear of damaging it as long as you are careful. It's not "scuba ready" though.

There are also dynamics improvements so you get a much better sound now; side-by-side with the iPhone X, it's subtle but noticeable difference. The iPhone XS sounds more rounded with slightly better bass, which in turn provides a wider soundstage feel. It's not a huge jump from the iPhone X, but it's better.

Available in gray and silver as before, a new gold version is also available. But this gold is more muted gold rather than what we call jewelry gold, while the back sports a subtle "Flesh" color that is popular in chic high heel shoes. Christian Louboutin has his heart. It's not a brush as you might think, and certainly not bling in a rough way. In fact, we rather like it.

Performance gets a boost

  • New 7nm A12 bionic processor
  • Storage capability, 512 GB
  • More battery than iPhone X

The most attention, of course, is not the design - Apple feels it cracked that last year - but Apple's processing power in the new iPhone. This year, which means the introduction of the A12 bionic chip.

The launch of a new phone focused on buzzwords like the nervous system and multi-core processors. Apple even said that it was a 7nm chip, making it one of the first to market with this new architecture.

What you really need to know is that the A12 Bionic is able to sense what the phone is trying to do and offload computational issues to different processors to make it more efficient.

The new processor opens up a lot of possibilities that many applications haven't taken advantage of yet. There's a sense that the A12 Bionic is preparing the iPhone XS for the growing needs of the future rather than a rewriting experience now. Apple itself is using the processor for new camera skills — like the HDR smart camera — to open an app faster (up to 30% faster app launches according to Apple), and to achieve long battery life, which we'll talk about in a second.

Power-hunger games like Asphalt 9: Legends load in seconds (faster than the iPhone X) with high-intensity tasks like AR apps that use the camera, graphics card, processor, and a bunch of other things all at the same time is easy to work. The old iPhone X is a smooth experience and in the iPhone XS - upgraded from - until you notice a huge difference in strength, it's laying the foundation for continued strong performance in the future.

Battery life and charging

  • Longer battery than iPhone X
  • Faster wireless charging
  • Fast charging capability via optional charger

The good thing is that the extra processing doesn't affect battery life. In fact, this is one of the advantages of the 7nm architecture in that Apple is more energy efficient.

The iPhone XS is more efficient in terms of battery performance, extending about 21 hours and 30 minutes of talk time - 30 minutes more than the iPhone X (according to Apple's figures), and in practice we noticed a slight increase compared to The iPhone X. Gone are the days of needing a power boost around 4pm because you're addicted to playing the latest games or shooting 4K videos.

The rules are the same though, use it hard and the battery will still drain quickly. Apple hasn't invented the infinite battery yet.

  • The best wireless chargers for iPhone

One benefit that the new model brings is that wireless charging is now faster, between 5-20 percent, but then again, you might not notice how that's not the difference. If you really want fast charging, you'll have to buy a more powerful charging adapter and cable. Fast charging is fast, though so worth it if you're not a power user.

Cameras are much better even in low light conditions

  • Two 12 megapixel cameras on the back
  • One 7 megapixel camera on the front
  • New camera features include smart HDR and adaptive depth of field

The new iPhone XS certainly expands on the skill set built into the iPhone X and here you can really see improvements over previous iPhone models.

While the rear dual camera has a 12-megapixel wide-angle and telephoto lens (as before), the sensors now have more pixels, expanding to 1,4µm on the previous cameras' 1,22µm. What makes it both better at absorbing light and enhancing low-light photography.

This comes to the fore in difficult photo situations, such as photographing candles in the dark. While the iPhone X does reasonably well, the iPhone Xs is noticeably better, delivering atmospheric punch with much less noise. It also increases the dynamic range to improve these HDR features with Apple introducing a new feature called Smart RBR.

The feature crunches more photographic data to ensure your photos look even better than on previous devices. Smart HDR mode, although described as brand new from Apple at the presentation, is actually a fairly common method and is found in most rival flagships, but definitely works with great results. What it does is take more consistent images, analyze scenes, fill in data and give you a better result.

We especially like that you can control yourself from f/1.4 to f/16. What does it mean in a photo conditions at f/1.4 the subject should be clearly in focus and the background will be blurred for that classic bokeh effect; at f/16 everything should be in focus across the scene for a flatter result. Want to change the bokeh effect? No problem.

While it's not new to the smartphone world - it was first released by HTC in 2014 - it looks very good on the iPhone xs.

While the iPhone does a good job of trying to get the F stop in the first place for a desirable portrait image, the bonus is that we were able to use the feature when the AI gets it wrong, reducing the effect in favor of the picture. For example, sometimes depth maps will see something in the background that's not part of the image, or it'll be a smudge from the edge of the hair so that the person doesn't look natural. In these cases, you may want to reduce exposure or exposure for a better result.

Apple also hopes to improve edge detection to deal with wavy hair, and while better than the iPhone X, it's still not perfect. The previous rule, making sure you have the contrast between the subject and the background is still valid.

Simply put, the iPhone and XS will take great photos under the right conditions, while new features give it a boost in popular areas - HDR and portrait photography.

Dual SIM: Yesim debuts

  • Will support Yesim
  • Esim at ee, O2 and Vodafone in the UK
  • Yes on all major carriers in the USA

The iPhone XS now also supports dual SIM, meaning you will be able to have two numbers/networks on the same device. Rather than having a dual SIM slot (this will only be available in China) in the UK and US, you will be able to add a second account through Yesim.

The technology was previously available on the Apple iPad and Apple Watch, but this is the first time it's been on the iPhone. In the US, all major carriers will support this feature, while in the UK, it will be available from the RO.

  • What is Yesim and what does it mean for your new iPhone?

The feature, when it launches later this year, is going to be great for those who carry two phones or travel a lot, as you'll be able to check in to another Yesima in this country.

Uh is still in price or part offered in the UK, but we suspect it will offer Yesim-only packages with a 30-day contract with a second SIM and works as easy as scanning a QR code.

on iOS 12

  • New software features
  • Faster application loading, better battery saving
  • More powerful AR offering
  • for iOS 13 also rides

iOS 12 is at the heart of the new iPhones, and it brings the usual set of new features to the phone. The new iPhone is fast, with the various apps we used quickly opening with little delay. The Arkit 2 apps we've used so far are running fast too, a sign that the phone can handle doing a lot of things (games, cameras, display, audio) all at the same time.

on iOS 12 is sharp, powerful, and at times, very useful. We've found Screen Time to be especially handy for letting us realize how much time we spend on our phone on an everyday basis. But it's not just about reducing our phone usage; Smart search boost in photos lets you search for things like "beach" or "animals" and there are more fun items like Memojis to keep you entertained.

There is still a lot we have yet to explore. Siri Shortcuts can be a game-changer (we're still learning) in allowing you to create rules and scripts for various tasks: something like "Hey Siri, Find my keys" and Siri was able to connect to tiles to help you find them, when In doing so, saying something like “Hey Siri, take me home” can cause Google Maps to open and your home address to download.

It's a bit overwhelming, but we're already seeing the potential for those who want to embrace it. It's a bit embarrassing that you can access Siri's suggested shortcuts through Application Settings, but if you want to make your own, you'll have to download Apple's new app.

Finally, the FaceTime group looks very interesting. We saw this in the demo, but it's a feature that isn't available at launch.

iOS 13 is coming too, with a system-wide dark mode, a new keyboard gesture, updates to stock apps, Maps and privacy enhancements.
