Best Alexa Speakers 2019: Top Amazon Echo Alternatives

Amazon Alexa will be great, it can control all sorts of smart home products, answer your questions and play the music you request.

Amazon's Echo Appliances aren't the only speakers that offer Alex's capable assistant, though - there are plenty of third-party options that have embraced Alex too.

From portable speakers to Alexa-compatible soundbars, we've brought together the very best Amazon Echo alternatives. If you're after Google Assistant Speakers, we've got a feature for those too.

Sonos One

Sonos entered the Alexa-enabled market dynamics in Sonos one. As well as Alex, he also offers Google Assistant too, making him one of the most capable smart speakers around. As you might expect, it sounds fantastic and looks just as good, although not all of Alex's skills have been available so far.

If you want one of the best sounding speakers around though, with Sonos multi-room capability and Alexa built in, look no further. Sonos announced an open smart speaker, called Sonos move, as well as a stripped-down version of Sonos one Sonos one SL is not a smart item.

Libratone Zipp Yes

There are 2 on the Libratone Zipp - this is a fantastic sounding portable speaker with interchangeable jackets. The sound is fired in 360 degrees and the overall profile can be adjusted using a dedicated app.

In its second generation, the Zipp 2 Rod is like Amazon Echo Plus on steroids. It sticks to its successful roots, combining great design with good sound, voice control and a decent app. In fact it's portable also means you can take Alex with you wherever you go.

The Bose Speaker 500 features a recognizable Bose design, but adds a front panel display that is completely unique to smart speakers. The 500's main speaker has eight microphone arrays to make sure it hears your Alexa commands, and there's a chance other voice assistants could be added in the future.

The Bose Speaker 500 supports the Amazon multi-room platform, allowing you to group this speaker with other Alexa speakers and it sounds great too.

UE Megablast

Ultimate Ears offers on Megablast (and less of a blast) where there is always-on Alexa voice control that always listens to your voice. The only caveat is that you need a Wi-Fi connection, so it can only be used at home.

Being a dedicated speaker in the first place, the Megablast UE sounds fantastic, and it's portable and waterproof, so while Alexa won't work outside of your Wi-Fi connection, Megablast frames offer great portable speaker functionality around the house.

KitSound Voice One

The KitSound Voice is, in fact, an Amazon Echo Plus, but with an even better grunt sound. This was done in partnership with Amazon, so you don't get the full Alex experience, meaning he can answer questions, play music from a variety of sources, and control smart home devices.

It is able to hear you speak from the other side of the room and up to eight voices from one speaker can be connected to multi-room playback.

Sonos follow Sonos one with this Sonos Beam soundbar offering Amazon's Alexa power built-in. Beam speaker and soundbar in one, with the same multi-room capability as all Sonos speakers.

Like Sonos One Beam too, Google Assistant now boasts support in the US and UK.

Team Audio Bar Polk

The command line regiment of audio marries Echo Dot with a full-fledged soundbar, that is, everything Echo Dot can do, the command line can do, including control of smart home products, as well as input source, volume controls and bass levels. It also supports Alex's multi-room compatibility - something Beam's reasons don't.

The command line is set up for movies and TV shows first, with music second, but it's a very viable Echo alternative, offering a huge sound that will be easy to fill out of most rooms, and the Voice Adjust technology shelf ensures voices come through loud and clear.

  • Regiment command line review: great quality and great sound to boot
