Best iPhone 2019: Which Apple Phone is the Best?

Our guide to the best iPhones has looked the same for the past 12 months, but things only start to change with the arrival of the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max.

These three new premium smartphones are likely to take our rankings by storm: the Pro devices have the most impressive specs we've seen in an iPhone so far, and the Device 11 has a very competitive price, so we can't just take it as a no.

Currently, Apple's 2018 iPhones rank a few at the top of this list, but that's sure to change soon.

We got our hands on the new iPhones to check them out briefly, but we're not going to add them to our list of the best iPhones until we've used them for a while. This allows us to pinpoint exactly where smartphones are on the list.

When our full in-depth comments go live, this list will see some rearrangements, so expect that in the near future.

The new iPhone lineup has also seen a shake-up in Apple's official iPhone lineup, and now it has a whole range of handsets covering all price points, as well as a montage graveyard of discontinued phones. You can still pick up 'discontinued' iPhones from various retailers and carriers, but the 'official' one will be easy to find.

The best iPhones aren't necessarily new, but Apple is constantly offering beefy hardware and software upgrades when introducing new iPhones, so we've found newer to be better.

Naming the best iPhone isn't as easy as looking at plain tech specs because cost and usability aren't as easy to determine - and even those metrics you've changed with the best iPhone deals can affect the cost of each device.

Therefore, we have taken the time to make extensive use of each iPhone in order to compare all the specs and features that new and old iPhones provide. We snapped with their cameras, played many games, and weighed the value you get for the price.

So, without further ado, here's our list of the very best iPhones on the market right now, keeping in mind that the clock is ticking on this list is getting a complete overhaul.

The best iPhone: what if you buy today

The iPhone 11 isn't Apple's highest-spec phone, but it replaces the iPhone XR's budget flagship in more efficient ways to become the preeminent phone of its generation in terms of value.

True, it doesn't hit the telephoto lens, but as we found in the Samsung Galaxy S10e, the combination of the main and ultra-wide lens is the most photo. Until it gets an OLED display, the LCD screen at least allows the phone to keep its best-in-its-gen battery crown. And it even gets a bit more RAM - up to 4GB from its 3GB predecessor.

Add in iOS 13 and all the new tricks coming to the iPhone 11 series and this phone is the meat of a photo-taking car — and all for $699, the cheapest iPhone debuted with the iPhone 8.

The iPhone 11 Pro Max is not only a confusing change in naming convention — it's the biggest, fastest, coolest iPhone out there. It's also the most expensive at a starting price of $1,099, which only goes up as you expand storage.

Not much has changed with the iPhone XS Max, aside from the updated camera room - but then again, adding an ultra-wide lens is a big upgrade. The photo software has also been upgraded, and the transition between zoom levels is much nicer than in other phones.

Battery life has been improved by as much as 4 hours compared to the iPhone xs Max, according to Apple. And if you can go beyond the really weird triple-lens rear camera unit, this is truly the most powerful iPhone out there.

This is actually Apple's best-selling iPhone, and there are several reasons for this. First, we get it, you don't give up on the 4.7-inch iPhone screen and frankly, we don't blame you. Every time we go back to this iPhone from "normal" sizes, we feel like we've just gone on a smartphone vacation. Secondly, its price is much more reasonable for a lot of people than iPhone X and iPhone 8 Plus.

Just because the size is the same as older iPhones doesn't mean what's behind it, though the technology is. The iPhone 8 has the same A11 Bionic chipset as the iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X, and it too debuted wireless charging and fast charging on an Apple smartphone.

The camera is exactly the same, even though it doesn't have the dual lens capabilities that are exclusive to the X and Plus, and you'll be digging iOS 11 while being larger than even the smaller SE iPhone.

The iPhone 8 Plus is the best iPhone if you're not ready to take the plunge into the future of Apple smartphones and need that Touch ID fingerprint sensor. It remains popular due to its screen size, cheaper price and physical home button.

It has a few key features you wanted, really. It's one of the first iPhones to have both wireless charging and fast charging, and the camera has improved. The dual-lens camera has no ROI in the telephoto lens (object saved for X), but it's still a great way to take pictures at long distances.

It doesn't turn nearly as many heads with its bezel-heavy design, but the iPhone 8 Plus is an iPhone built for big hands and slightly smaller than the new iPhone X's wallets.

The iPhone XR is a big upgrade for the average consumer who doesn't want to pay for the most expensive iPhone money (a lot of money) can buy. It's Apple, it's a "cheap" iPhone, at least when it comes to the recently launched handset. It's also the best iPhone of the new trio for battery life.

It stands out in a variety of colors for the iPhone XR: blue, white, black, yellow, coral, red. This contrasts strongly with the rather muted colors on the iPhone and iPhone xs xs max. It also shares the same internal specs: Apple's fast A12 bionic chipset and a 12MP dual-lens camera system with a single lens on the back.

  • for iPhone XR colors: which shade is best for you?

You don't get a dual-lens camera like on the top-tier iPhone, so you'll miss out on the telephoto. But smart HDR is a real advantage for photos, and here it is.

It's cheaper, it's more colorful and has a larger 6.1-inch screen. That's enough for most people, especially those who don't insist on an impressive OLED screen.

Despite the iPhone SE's small size and relatively modest price tag, it's still a top-of-the-range phone. It has the same free yet premium design as the metal-clad iPhone 5s and the same powerful Apple A9 chipset and rear camera on the iPhone 6s.

It lacks the 3D touchscreen features and high-resolution front camera of the 6S and beyond. The screen is also less impressive all round, thanks in large part to the lower contrast ratio. But it also compares to many mid-range phones.

It's also the most powerful 4-inch iPhone you can make, so for fans of compact form factors, this is the obvious choice. But the biggest thing is its price, as it's one of the cheapest iPhones you'll find on the market, and it's something of a bargain by Apple standards.

The iPhone XS Max is the best iPhone you can buy right now. This is the biggest and best apple iPhone - if your hands and wallets are big enough. It has a large 6,5-inch OLED screen with HDR10 support to make the colors pop. This is the perfect phone if you want a giant screen.

For that huge screen, improved dual-lens 12MP camera. Apple equipped it with smart HDR and increased the sensor size to capture more points. Don't let that static number fool you 12MP. iPhone XS Max (like XS) and new depth sensing capabilities to adjust bokeh (background blur) during and after shots.

TrueDepth brings back the camera with faster ID recognition, and your 7MP selfies do better depth control and smart HDR mode too. And of course, Animoji is back with iOS 12 Memoji Benefits now.

The iPhone xs is at most more expensive than the iPhone X and the iPhone xs which replaces the x, of course. But if you pay for it over two years in a contract (or under Apple's upgrade program), it's not much more than that from month to month.

Believe it or not, the iPhone XS is better than Apple's "small" phone. It has a 5.8-inch screen, so it's one more hand-cleaner than the Max, but still a significant upgrade for some people.

It's a bigger update than last year's iPhone X, our previous best iPhone recommendation, though you'll have to pay more attention to the changes - the design isn't different at all. It has a built-in HDR-capable 12MP camera, an improved TrueDepth front camera, and a fast A12 bionic chipset, just like the "big" iPhone XS Max.

In fact, this all-screen phone is pretty much the iPhone XS Max last year's smaller form factor. It has a smaller battery than the Max and obviously a smaller screen, but you can still catch the same great photos and videos on this device and play the same games. No, there are different ones.

The iPhone X is as impressive as it is expensive, but if you really want the best iPhone today and don't want to wait for an iPhone in SI, this is the one to get today. There are already millions of Apple fans since almost seven months ago. This is the future of Apple smartphones.

It has a large entire screen, with the exception of the notch cutout at the top that houses the new TrueDepth camera. It takes selfies to the next level and can also map your face to iPhone X-exclusive Animoji. If you don't know what it is now you probably won't care.

iPhone X is the 10th anniversary of Apple's smart phones and almost all iPhone users have long requested, with a more advanced design, to faster specifications and new features. You just have to get used to the face ID instead of reaching for that non-existent fingerprint sensor.

Don't like the big iPhone 7 plus above? Why not opt for the iPhone 7 which is a smaller and cheaper alternative.

It was one of the first iPhones to lack headphones, but it does come with a water-resistant design, which means your phone is more likely to survive the odd drop in the sink, rather than just being exhausted right now.

There's no dual camera lens on the iPhone 7, but you can still take some absolutely incredible photos with the 12MP sensor.

If you have an iPhone 6 or iPhone 6s, you might not see much of a difference with this phone, but the new processor and camera tech might be enough to entice you to buy it if you can't stomach the high price of the iPhone 8.

Back in 2016, the iPhone 7 Plus was the best phone Apple has ever made, and it remains a winner for durability and price. It's bigger than the iPhone X though, despite the smaller display, so if you're after a small phone with a bigger screen, this will be the best choice for you, with its 5,5-inch 1080p display.

Significant upgrades to older iPhones include a waterproof housing and a new dual-lens camera that allows you to snap two 12MP lenses at the same time. This allows for better optical zoom, as well as bokeh mode, to blur the background of your photos and put the main focus in the foreground.

Battery life on the iPhone 7 Plus is vastly improved on the iPhone 6S Plus, and while it's still not an expensive option, it's a lot cheaper than it was at launch, making it one of the best iPhone choices for those looking online.

Pictures 6s, as you probably know, has been Apple's flagship since 2015. With an Apple A9 chipset and a massive 2GB of RAM, up from 1GB on the previous model, make it far more powerful than the 2014 model, and still fast enough by today's standards, and there are a few more tricks.

It has a 12MP rear camera and a proven 8MP front camera, which at the time was the best Apple selfie shooter on a phone.

It sports basically the same design and screen as the iPhone 6, though the latest in particular is starting to feel a bit dated in the face of the super sharp inch QHD screens from rivals - and the new iPhone X.

It was the first iPhone before the Sports 3D Touch that makes a pressure-sensitive screen and offers new tricks for enhancing email and home screen shortcuts.
