Marvel Avengers game: release date, news, trailers and first impressions

After two years of secrecy, Square Enix and Crystal speakers are starting to talk about their first Avengers game - or as we know it, Marvel Avengers.

At Square Enix's 2019 E3 press conference, we finally got our first look at the game in history trailer, which seems to riff on some of the biggest moments from the Avengers comics. You'll play as your favorite Avengers in an all-new story set in the Marvel Universe, featuring many Avengers throughout the game (with the exception of Hawkeye) as you save the day from an evil force. According to Crystal Dynamics, the all-star game, which includes Laura Bailey, Nolan North, and Troy Baker, are some of the most prominent voice actors in the gaming industry.

It was at E3 this year that it was also revealed that the game would have a multiplayer component besides the single player campaign, although this wasn't shown during the events - but we got your hands on the time with the game at Gamescom 2019.

While we only have hands on time in the Avenger campaign mode, what we heard from the crystal speaker in the closed briefing is that you'll be going into teams of four online, playing and fighting online together in new scenarios. Crystal Dynamics says this content will be free and will be released on a permanent clip. Last but not least, we got a reliable release date: 15 May 2020.

Here's everything we know about Enix's big foray into the Marvel Universe.

While the developers do not immediately confirm or deny, smirk and laughter, we are invited to this case.

Skill Trees

As you progress, you will unlock skill points and trees that will allow you to define your play style. Skills include both classics and new movements, and are categorized as follows: core, specialty, competence, and utility.

Earn and upgrade equipment

You can customize your gear to suit your play style. The gear has different rarities and as you progress you can unlock perks for pieces of gear.

War table

Players choose either hero missions (single player campaign focusing on one hero) or war zone missions (can be played with any hero in a team of up to four people) across the table. The hero missions will flesh out the story and allow you to unlock new heroes, while the war zone missions will expand the narrative.

Who is the bad guy?

Crystalline Dynamics Now it's common that the Avengers will basically fight against a corporation called 'advanced mechanics' (aka goal) who believe that science will save the world. With superheroes outlawed after the day of the incident, Target replaced them with Ma - and who are the superheroes in check.

Cosmetic microtransactions

The Avengers will have a market where players can buy cosmetic outfits for their heroes. While some outfits can be unlocked, others must be purchased with real money. According to Crystal Dynamics, there are outfits covering Marvel comics history, TV shows, movies, and more.

Comic-Con San Diego

San Diego Comic-Con has come and gone, but not without major events for Marvel Avengers fans. In a panel for the game hosted by Creative Director Sean Escayg, he explained to attendees that the game will allow players to play through the original Avengers story, with customizable characters and online multiplayer. There will be a main story campaign where you will play as different Avengers and then in online co-op which is where you will do your character customization. These customizations include skill trees as well as appearance changes.

There are also footage shown of the game. While this footage is supposed to be members-only and went out to the public at Gamescom, it was leaked and you can see the leaked footage for yourself in our trailers section.

The footage shows how the prologue to the game's main story campaign, which sees the day of the event in San Francisco, go wrong after the explosion. Footage of Thor, Iron Man and Hulk in action against Taskmaster's minions. It shows on the different kinds of moves and skills each hero brings to the table, but also shows that more than the main group will appear in the game. Ms. Marvel makes an appearance in the footage, but whether she will actually play is unknown.

Offline and solo games

He confirmed that Marvel's Avengers will offer players the option to play offline and solo, despite its emphasis on online multiplayer. In an interview GamesIndustryBiz, Crystal Dynamics boss, Scott Amos, said that players "can have the full experience and have fun" even if they never go online.

No access, or boxes of loot

It's also confirmed by Scott Amos that paywalls and boxes of loot won't be in the game. It seems that monetization will come from completely non-necessarily cosmetic purchases. This will allow players to invest in their favorite heroes and make them look exactly the way they want.

“The idea, from the beginning, is that we want you to be able to customize your hero; how they look, how they play, the equipment they have and how they use it,” said Amos.

"Your Black Widow might be different from my Black Widow - just a little, maybe a lot - depending on what you prefer and how you unlock things."

Of course, players will also be able to earn new items as they play, as well.

Gameplay

The most important thing we saw was gameplay that felt like a third-person adventure in the spirit of Marvel's Spider-Man. We know we'll get a chance to play almost all of the most famous Avengers at some point, with the exception of Hawkeye, who unfortunately wasn't part of the opening.

Marvel's Avengers will feature "continuous single-player and co-op play" and that players can "assemble into teams of up to four players, the main one with unusual abilities...and lay down their powers" - that is, an online multiplayer component that Crystal Dynamics has not yet revealed, but we hope that we will hear about it a little later.

Focus on history

Marvel's Spider-Man blew us away last year with a story full of heart, characters we cared about, and some sensational performances to boot. Square Enix and developer Crystal Dynamics have a wonderful opportunity to put the storytelling befitting of the incredible roster of Marvel characters they've inherited.

Luckily, it looks like they're doing just that with The Avengers.

We know the game takes place in a day, the day the Avengers get what they deserve for their service to the community. This day of jubilation, however, quickly went bust, and our heroes toiled ours – giving us a real exploded vibe.

Apparently, the heroes are getting back together, and they will have to face a new threat that was not shown in the trailer.

Permanent content?

Crystalline Dynamics emphasized the idea of "continuous" play in an "ever-expanding world". All of this content could be a PS4 first thanks to a deal between the company and Sony, but it will all be free on all platforms. Recent game-as-a-service titles such as Destiny, Anthem and Section 2 have not been praised for their top-level storytelling, so the show will hopefully confirm the experience is not scammed in favor of perpetual gains.

Fresh, varied assortment of heroes

Decades of comics, and 22 films in 11 years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe ensure fans are well versed in many of the classic Marvel heroes. While we love Iron Man, Captain America, the Hulk, and Thor, we think it's time to introduce some fresh, little-known faces to Marvel's Avengers.

But for some reason, Hawkeye is not part of the presentation and Hank Pym - aka Ant-Man - is only given a supporting role.

We'd love to see Han in the spotlight, perhaps even along with other later Avengers like Ironheart, Miles Morales, and Squirrel Girl. Why not?

It's a big game of crystal dynamics constantly

In a recent interview, Crystal Dynamics head of the studio Scott Amos told GamesIndustry.Biz that this is the biggest developer game to date, requiring five studios from around the world to make:

“We have to change the way we work, the way we are organized as a team, the number of people we have to do it, the number of outside partners… we had to hire experts like Sean Escayg who is our creative director. He told stories on Uncharted and The Last of Us [on Naughty Dog], we need him to help tell that story. Dave Fifield was the game director who worked on Halo and Call of Duty, we needed him to help us with multiplayer,” said Amos.

Five studios working on the title of Crystal Dynamics in Redwood Shores, a new studio in Bellevue called Crystal Northwest, partners of Crystal Dynamics in the Netherlands, Buy, Eidos Montreal and even Japan's Enix area.

Five teams to bring five Avengers to life? Sounds right.
