Next AMG C63 Cuvette V8 Hybrid Four Pot

Mercedes C63 white But the new, all-wheel drive Mercedes-AMG C63 is expected to retain 500 hp. s.-plus when it goes on sale in 2021

Mercedes-AMG will send a clear signal that it's adapting to modern requirements with the upcoming third-generation C63, ditching its longtime V8 power for an advanced four-cylinder hybrid powertrain that develops over 500bhp. With..

The new C63 will be the first in a line of new AMG models to receive an electrified version of Mercedes' new turbocharged 2,0-liter M139 engine when it goes on sale in early 2022.

The four-wheel-drive competitor for the Audi RS4 and BMW M3 is already undergoing intensive development at AMG's Affalterbach engineering headquarters.

The powerful four-cylinder engine kicks out a maximum of 416bhp and 369lb ft of torque in non-electrified form in the new A45 and related siblings. The unit is already designed for longitudinal mounting as well as mild hybrid electrical stimulation. It's destined to be used not only on the next C63, but also, in a much lesser degree of tuned form, in a continuation of today's turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 powered C43.

The new C63 will be offered as a sedan, coupe and convertible vehicle, with the next C43 likely to be sold in three guises as well as an estate version.

Other AMG models set to launch the new electrified powertrain include today's successor models of the GLC 43 and GLC 63 SUVs, the GLC 43 Coupe and GLC 63 Coupe.

The car was told the M139 engine would adopt a 48V integrated starter, similar to the already used turbocharged 3,0-liter M256 inline-six that powers the CBS 53 4Matic+ all-wheel drive and other recent new AMG models.

The CLS 53 all-wheel drive 4Matic+ gear-mounted starter motor provides an extra 22bhp and 184lb ft of electric propulsion. In the next C63, however, it must be tuned to deliver significantly more power coupled with a similar load of torque.

A new EQ-boosting hybrid powertrain is also planned to be launched in conjunction with Mercedes' nine-speed torque-converter MST Speedshift gearbox.

Nothing official at this early stage, but Affalterbach insiders with knowledge of ANG's new model are planning to offer a new four-cylinder hybrid drive that will match the existing second-generation C63 4Matic all-wheel drive with a V8 engine in sheer power at a maximum of 503bhp. And this despite a 50% reduction in swept capacity and number of cylinders. With the benefit of electric boost, it has also been conceived to deliver up to 553lb ft of torque – that's 37lb ft tall on today's C63 with 4Matic all-wheel drive.

Details remain scarce, although the new powertrain should adopt a higher-capacity lithium-ion battery than the 0.9 kWh used in the CLS 4Matic and 53+. It is also expected to use a more advanced energy recovery system that collects kinetic energy at each wheel.

One of the biggest benefits in adopting the new electrified powertrain is the weight reduction on the front axle of the new C63 4Matic all-wheel drive.

At 160.5 kg, the M139 four-cylinder unit weighs 48.5 kg less than the M177 V8 engine used on today's C63 4Matic all-wheel drive. Even with the addition of a hybrid architecture, including a disc-shaped electric motor and power electronics, the overall weight of the new powerplant was claimed to undercut what today's units are.

In addition, the new powerplant's weight is concentrated lower, which aids efforts to provide a low center of gravity for the new model, theoretically improving its maneuverability and body control. Further development plans for the upcoming C63 4Matic include a new four-wheel drive system to allow for fully variable power distribution from front to rear. This will allow AMG to design a new model with rear-wheel drive properties, in certain driving modes, much like the big brother E63. AMG CEO Tobias Moers told the car earlier this year that all new-generation AMG models will adopt this system, moving away from pure reardriven models thanks to growing demand for all-wheel drive.

The decision to provide the C63 4Matic with four-cylinder power was apparently driven by Mercedes-Benz as part of a rapidly growing effort to reduce fleet CO2 emissions while using the technical lessons pursued in the development of the Mercedes-AMG one hypercar.
