Best Xbox One x games: what to play on the most powerful console

Since the Xbox One was released two years ago, the powerful console has changed the limits of gaming - improving graphics with true 4K resolution. It offers the best that can be done on the console, at least until the next generation of Xbox Project Scarlett launches.

We now know over 250 Xbox One X enhanced games for the new-ish console, including new titles such as Assassin's Creed Odyssey and Forza Horizon 4. While we'd like to tell you, all of these games will ooze visual clarity when you put them on your TV, not all of them will look like they've just come out of a developer's oven.

You see, although the Xbox One X is capable of 4K/HDR shooting at 60fps along with Dolby Atmos sound, not all games are guaranteed to have all of these improvements. Some will support them all, and some will support HDR and nothing more.

With that in mind, we've created a list of the best Xbox One x games that push the console to its limits. Here you'll find games with patch details that confirm they'll hit at least two of the console's capabilities, be it 4K, HDR, or Dolby Atmos.

We've also included information on some new games from one of the Xbox X's improvements to the build in an effort to keep you up to date on what's on the horizon for a 4K-ready console.

It's worth noting that you'll be able to pick up most of the games on this list for cheap during Black Friday and Cyber Monday - so keep an eye out.

What are its improvements? Native 4K and 60fps

As the first non-resident evil title built using Capcom's re-engineer, the Xbox One X version of Devil May Cry 5 impresses with its incredibly beautiful presentation.

While each version of Hideaki Itsuno's Hack-and-Slash is a masterpiece of 60fps goals, the Xbox One X version is able to deliver that framerate consistently, making it the perfect way to experience Devil May Cry 5 in a living room setting.

Along with its buttery-smooth framerate, Devil May Cry 5 is also presented at 4K resolution on One X, which is a huge improvement over the standard 900p resolution on Xbox One.

As you'd expect, detail is extraordinary here, with a vibrant play of HDR-enhanced art design showcasing the power of Microsoft's premiere console to magnificent effect. The characters display incredible determination, as do many of the game's challenging environments and demon's grotesque creations.

One of the most visually beautiful games currently available, Devil May Cry 5 is recommended for those who want to take advantage of the huge graphical Xbox One x Valor.

What are its improvements? Native 4K (3840x2160 30fps)

While it doesn't boast cutting edge PC versions of ray tracing effects, it's hard to fault what game developer 4A has done with the Xbox One X version of Exodus Metro.

Locked at 30fps, the 4A's engine never seems to falter during intense firefights, with a smooth consistency that keeps the stock moving at all times. Of course, there are those who may have been hoping for a 1080p/60fps variant to be included in the final release, but rest assured, the subway outcome looks and feels great at 30fps.

As has become commonplace with all major game releases these days, Metro Exodus offers HDR settings no matter what Xbox console it's on - from the original base model from 4K-ready to Xbox One X.

Of course, you'll find that the high dynamic games of the series look better on Microsoft's premiere console, with its extra resolution allowing you to see more subtle color gradations and an extra level of detail in shadowy areas.

Despite the world exodus subway brutal and unforgiving, there are moments of extreme beauty to be found in the game. In the open world desert section, we are constantly amazed by the glowing sunlight that penetrates through the clouds and reflects off the sandy terrain.

Easily the best way to play the game on your home console: the Xbox One X-Enhanced Exodus Metro's 4K resolution really highlights the sheer amount of detail in both the claustrophobic interiors and huge, wide-open areas.

More than just an arbitrary number of vertical and horizontal lines, the Xbox One x Ultra HD resolution does a fantastic job of fully immersing the player in the greatest world that 4A games has created to date.

What are its improvements? 4K and HDR video mode (3840x2160 30fps or 1920x1080 at 60fps)

The only word that can be used to describe Forza 4's Horizon is awesome. The latest addition to open world title racing is a testament to the power of one improvement for the Xbox X. Racing in the UK in 4K is a truly immersive experience, pushing the dynamic game of the season.

If the main 4K mode isn't bright enough, the new 60fps mode will blow you away with its smooth transitions and its picture perfect take on every pothole, lavender field and stone-throwing wall in Britain.

Assassin's Creed games are known to be visual masterpieces and Odyssey is no different. One improvement for Xbox X is the true Greek world of Odyssey to Life, with higher resolution textures, denser crowds, improved depth of field and an overall richer environment.

What are its improvements? 4K/30fps or 1080p/60fps

If you've previously had the opportunity to play Rise of the Tomb Raider on Xbox One X, then you probably have a pretty good idea of what to expect from the next, Shadow of the Tombs, in terms of improvements.

Like its predecessor, Shadow of the Tomb Raider can be played using settings that promote either ruling or performance - the former allows the game to be played regularly at native 4K resolution, while the game's latest drops all the way up to 1080p, but offers much smoother gameplay targeting 60 frames per second.

Needless to say, Shadow of the Tomb Raider benefits greatly from the extra detail provided by its rise to 4K resolution. The environments (particularly foliage, water, and mud) are absolutely stunning in 4K, making this the best entry in the series to date.

However, it's not a completely flawless presentation, with occasional screen flickering and framerate drops appearing during some games in more graphically intensive sections. However, it's highly likely that developer Eidos Montreal is working on a patch to iron out these issues - we'll be checking into the game in the near future to see if they've been addressed.

While Tomb Raider's shadow mode shows a noticeable drop in visual fidelity compared to its resolution mode, the game still looks great. There's a smoother frame rate that gives players an extra level of responsiveness, making its controls become more tactile in the process.

It's clear that a lot of work has been put into the shadow of the Tomb Raider improvements, and if the performance and hitches are likely to be addressed in an update, the game really shines on the Xbox One X.

What are its improvements? 4K/30fps or 1800p/60fps

Although nearly a decade old, the Red Faction Guerrilla arrives on Xbox One X with impressive visual enhancements that serve to make the game's destructive architecture and huge explosions all the more satisfying. In the display options in the game, you will find two video options: high quality and high performance. The former sees the game aim in 4K resolution at 30fps, while the latter drops the resolution slightly at 1800p, delivering a smoother 60fps.

To the naked eye, high-quality resolution benefits aren't immediate, given that the Xbox One X is automatically upscale anyway 4K. However, the buttery-smooth frame rate in High Performance mode immediately catches the eye, especially while driving around the vast Martian landscapes of the Red Guerrilla Faction.

As part of its 're-Mars-nulled package', the game is also getting improved textures and lighting, which are working hard to enhance the game's visual appeal. Of course, no one denies that Red Faction Guerrilla is like a re-release of the last generation of the title, with very slight color variations in environments and shadows that are just a little too dark (enable HDR mode, probably gave the game endless browns, reds and oranges a bit more life and diversity).

Still, it's as good as Red Faction: Guerrilla can ever look on consoles, and if you're a fan of the game from the original version, we heartily recommend that you pick up this stellar rework and get your ass to Mars again ASAP .

What is this? It took "hell" a long time ago, but Doom has already been updated for Xbox One's. While the game has always looked incredible, it now looks sharper than ever thanks to the native 4K update. As before, the game still runs at 60FPS, the Xbox One X version of the game offers the best of both worlds. True, we'd love it if this feature was added given how long this update has been in pregnancy, but we can't argue with the 4K update we got. Seriously, Doom looks incredible in ultra high definition, and his buttery smooth frame rate is just the icing on the cake.

A contender for the most beautiful open-world shooter to date, far from 5 gets a whole host of impressive upgrades when played on Xbox One x. Unlike many games that use dynamic scaling techniques to keep their resolutions as close to 4K as possible, Far Away 5 boasts a full and unshakable 3840 x 2160 resolution that never shrinks. It also manages to retain the temporal anti-aliasing that made Ubisoft's own killer Origin Creed look so spectacular on Microsoft's high-end console.

HDR settings are also available at far from 5, although you won't be able to adjust them as carefully as you could with the 'Paper-White Origin' and 'Maximum Brightness' sliders. However, the game looks and runs great on Xbox One x 30fps. In addition, users playing on the console will also receive increased terrain and shadow detail. We can only hope that every Ubisoft title going forward looks as good as it does on Xbox One X.

Although his art style is simplistic, there is incredible beauty to be found in the presentation of the newest rare IC, the Sea of Thieves. This online multiplayer pirate adventure is available on Xbox One and PC, and while the latter offers unlocked frame rates and ultra-wide monitor support, the console version ultilizes HDR to really bring the game to life - sunsets have never been more spectacular in a video game. Luckily, Sea of Thieves supports crossplay between Windows 10 and Xbox, so you can play with anyone.

In addition to the bright and expressive-enhanced visuals, the sea of thieves cartoon art style is supported by 4K video resolution on the Xbox One X. Do you think the water is especially beautiful in the Sea of Thieves - we'd even go so far as to call it the most realistic water in any video game to date.

What can I say, the Sea of Thieves is most impressive when you stand on the deck of the ship, watching the sun go down behind the island filled with the promised treasure. The weather can change on you in an instant, with a dynamic cloud simulation and storm system that really kicks up the intensity as you prowl the game's oceans.

If you want a game that shows how much the Xbox One X can enhance the visual experience, we suggest you set sail for the Sea of Thieves.

The epic post-apocalyptic role-playing game Bethesda has received an update for the Xbox One X that brings it in line with the PS4 version of the game. We now have 4K resolution, although the game still exhibits horizontal scaling in more graphically intense moments.

That said, at its lowest, it still delivers an impressive 3264x2160 resolution, well above the PS1440 Pro's 4p target.

Elsewhere, improvements have been made to frame rates in Fallout 4 on Xbox One, hitting your target at 30fps more consistently than it was at launch, although you'll still find out of bounds on occasion - the problem on the PS4 Pro version isn't It has.

So far, even with the extra frames of Hiccup, Fallout 4 is great on Xbox One X, making it the best way to experience the game on consoles.

Using Xbox One X Power, CD Projekt Red has created two advanced modes: one offers 4K resolution and runs at a solid 30fps, while the other uses dynamic resolution and promises a smooth 60fps. Both options will allow you to enjoy HDR, a technology that really shines in the fast-paced game world.

What is this? From the very first chapter, which takes place on the D-Day of the Normandy invasion, Call of Duty: World War II impresses with its graphic presentation.

We've all come to expect the Call of Duty series to deliver 60fps gameplay regardless of platform, but when that frequency is used in conjunction with the Xbox One's 4K resolution boost and HDR features, game action takes place at an extraordinary level of detail and clarity.

Like many other Xbox One X-enhanced games, Call of Duty: WWII has HDR mode sliders that allow you to adjust the in-game brightness and white balance to your taste - a very valuable addition that we hope carries over to all enhanced games in the future. Frankly, we want every game on the console to look this good.

What is this? Forza Motorsport 7 was Microsoft's poster child for the Xbox One X and so far is the game that has received the most attention in terms of performance scores.

As the first installment of the title, the game development team has been able to make full use of the power of the Xbox One x. The patch games promise 4K resolution at 60fps with HDR support.

Thanks to HDR, the sun hit the track and our car looked brighter than ever. 4K resolution also allows the developer to turn around 10 studios to recreate cars and their interiors in amazing detail. This is especially evident in cars with upholstery (pictured) - the blur of suede, synthetic material looks just like the real thing!

Combined with 4K resolution, HDR and locked 60 fps brings with it some incredibly detailed and realistic visuals with crisp and responsive gameplay. Buckle up for a real show-stopping Xbox One x demo drive in Forza Motorsport 7.

What are its improvements? 4K and HDR

What is this? As you'd probably expect, Assassin's Creed Origins uses the power of the Xbox One X to make some serious visual impact. The game renders in 4K (although those without 4K screens will still enjoy stock 1080p) and supports HDR too.

High resolution support means the game's environments and characters are taken seriously with very realistic textures, and the power of the console's processor means the quality is maintained over long distances.

However, it's HDR that makes the game really shine, creating more contrast between bright sunlight and flames and shadows. It adds real depth to the game world, capturing the blinding brightness of the Egyptian sun and making the shadows of the tombs feel mercifully cool. As with most of the Xbox One X-enhanced games we've tested, Assassin's Creed Origins has an HDR slider that lets you manually adjust the paper game's white balance as well as the TV's brightness nits.

After playing a few hours of the game on the Xbox One X, we found the game to be impressive with wonderful textures and a surprisingly consistent frame rate considering everything that was happening on the screen at the same time.

What is this? Continuing the trend of giving users the option to use extra graphics x horsepower, Shadow of War features two different graphics settings: you can either have permission to benefit the game or a quality service.

Opt for resolution, and the game will try to get as close to 4K as possible (falls back to dynamic scaling when that's not possible).

Opt for quality and improvements will be more ambitious, but will not bring the same benefit to the resolution. Textures will see improved detail, draw distances will improve, there will be more vegetation and shadows and lighting will be improved.

Both modes feature HDR, and unfortunately will only run at 30fps rather than 60fps some of the other titles on this list.

What is this? You've probably heard of the JRPG Phenomenon, which is the ultimate fantasy and XV is the latest addition. The gaming is already amazing, but we're looking forward to seeing what has been done with the power here of Xbox One X - Eos' "open world" treatment in 4K.

What is this? Bungie may have left the Halo series to focus on destiny, but the blockbuster Xbox series is still alive and well thanks to developer company 343 Industries. The most recent entry, Halo 5: Guardians, was released back in 2015, but it will be receiving treatment for the Xbox One X through a patch that is available now.

When patched for the Xbox One X, the game will continue to run at 60fps as it did originally, but with the added bonus of upscaling 4K resolution.

Unfortunately, due to the age of the original release, the game will not receive HDR updates along with its 4K one. Still, native 2160p resolution and a rock-solid 60fps shouldn't be neglected.

What are its improvements? 4K, HDR and 60 fps

What is this? Minecraft is a game that needs no introduction, and the super duper graphics package is its sharpest abstract world ever seen. We have to look at the Xbox One x-Enhanced version of the game, and it was pretty funny to see a prettier version, which is essentially a very simple kind of game.

While the game retains its famous blocky look (we certainly don't want to change it), it gets vastly improved lighting thanks to the presence of HDR technology support. For example, your creations can now be viewed with the added glorious sunset bonus.

The colors will also get an extra boost, looking less even in the process, and the vegetation also looks more detailed than before. Still, you can be sure that the Xbox One X-version of the game doesn't mess around with the formula too much - it just makes it better.

What are its improvements? 1440p (upgraded to 4K) and HDR

What is this? We hope you have enough space on your hard drive, because patches for the game are required: for the Xbox One X-Quantum Break Enhanced Version, combined with the game itself install, it will take up a staggering 178GB of console storage. Welcome to gaming in the future!

So what do huge patches do I give you exactly? Well, since the game is incredibly demanding from a hardware point of view, even on a high-end PC, Quantum Break technically runs at 1440p but shows up as 2160p in the video settings.

According to digital foundryThe game uses 'Temporal Reconstruction' method which gives the illusion of 4K by cloning frames and using the information to make the resolution look much higher than that. The original Xbox version did the same, taking its native 720p resolution and applying the same technique to create the illusion of 1080p.

On top of this, the game has received a texture boost, making its visuals look much sharper in the process. Oddly enough, the film grain effect seen in the standard Xbox version of the game was completely over one x, giving Quantum Break a lot more depth and clarity to its presentation.

It's a shame that 60fps isn't available, but given the cinematic nature of the game's film and TV-based simulation, it looks like the drug the developer would have preferred that way, regardless. Either way, Quantum Break clearly looks beautiful on the Xbox One X.

What is this? Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019) is something of a reboot of the best-selling FPS franchise - eliminating zombie frills, a jetpack, double jumps and futuristic contraptions to grounded in what military engagement actually looks like in the 21st century.

The name is no coincidence, in 2007's Modern Warfare has become a landmark entry in the Call of Duty series, Activision and want to recreate what made the game with the same name and success.

Modern warfare is all about the gritty realities of war this time around, from 'modern' to 'modern warfare' with the gear, weapons and gadgets that are used today in the Middle East and Russia rather than in the distant fantasies of science fiction writers.

While Modern Warfare has some glaring issues in regards to its campaign, it's still the best montage the series has ever seen - with tight shooting and more multiplayer modes than you can shake a stick. And with one Xbox X accessory, it really looks spectacular.

What is this? For the uninitiated, the Frontier franchise is built on the desire to transfer. Players are earning loot at an almost obscene rate by constantly unlocking new weapons and abilities with which to battle through stylized environments that look even better with Xbox X accessories.

While Borderlands 3 doesn't offer that much in terms of new ones, those who have played the previous installments are unlikely to be disappointed.

What are its improvements? 4K, HDR, Dolby Atmos and 60fps

What is this? The fourth entry in the Gears of War series already looked like the original Xbox One, however it looks like it's amazing as hell when enhanced for the Xbox One X. Once patched, new advanced video options appear in the game's settings, which give the player control over every major aspect of the game's presentation.

You can choose whether you want to place preference on detail (with 4K texture resolution and 30fps) and performance (locked on 60fps and increased graphics detail). While the jump in detail is noticeable while playing in 4K, the operation mode looks almost as good in terms of textures, with the added bonus of running at a buttery-smooth frame rate.

And, while the Xbox One already introduced Gears of War 4 with HDR settings, they got a push here to work in conjunction with the game's 4K rendering, which provided it with a wide color gamut to display in much more detail. You'll find a very RVB brightness slider in the settings, and if you want a real picture of the difference between standard and high dynamic range, you can split the screen and I can see them side-by-side while playing.

Although it's a slightly older version, the coalition has done a great job to turn Gear 4 into a poster child for what the Xbox One X is capable of.

What is this? We've been waiting a while to see the new Gears name, and Gear 5 certainly didn't disappoint.

Gear 5 looks particularly stunning on the powerful Xbox platform, making the most of what the Xbox One x enhancements have to offer.

What is this? FIFA is, for many console owners, an anticipated annual event. The latest and arguably biggest installment in the football sim series has arrived in the form of FIFA 20, and it's on our list of the best Xbox One games.

With this year's iteration of the stalwart series, EA seems to have taken some bold steps in the right direction, especially when it comes to giving players what they've been asking for in terms of game modes and statistical tinkering.

Add to that a fantastic new way to play Volta, a light-hearted set of modes for Co-op and some smart, subtle gameplay tweaks to fish out a more fair and rewarding game of football, it's definitely not between a year or just a miss if you're a franchise fan . In fact, this might be the best FIFA game in a good few years, achieved mainly by responding to fan feedback with healthy design choices.
