Nissan will use this in kimono style and livery in Formula E

Start the week with news in a nutshell as our journalists lift the lid on all things motorsport

In wrapping up this week's motorsports news and gossip, Nissan's Formula E livery is giving the go-ahead to the brand's legacy ahead of the season opener, Lewis Hamilton says there's no movie, and BTCC's driver plans through 2020.

We're also calling this week's rise to the stars, and highlight some of the biggest cars that will be included in our rally.

Nissan Formula E teams will be wearing kimonos this season. Well, sort of. Nissan has shown a new look for its team in the electric series - and new liveries, apparently inspired by Japanese clothing. Black, red and white designs will also be featured on the upcoming Nismo Hot Sheet RU.

Formula E starts November 22

Meanwhile, the Formula E teams have passed two group tests ahead of the new season, which starts in Saudi Arabia on November 22nd. BMW Max Günther was fast, but it all looks quite competitive: the top 21 drivers were only separated by a second. It's not such good news for the new Mercedes team, with drivers Nyck de Vries and Stoffel Vandorn battling over pace and suffering technical issues.

Sutton Eyes 2020 BTCC's

Former BTCC champion Ashley Sutton said he was "plotting" his attack on the series next year despite Subaru's withdrawal from the championship as a result of the firm's ending to deal with the BIS service. Sutton is enjoying great success driving the levogue, including winning the final race of the season.

Weird revelation of the week: Lewis Hamilton says he turned down a cameo in the new Top Gun 2 movie. Hamilton, who voiced one of the Cars 2 characters, told ESPN that he loved the original film but just didn't have time to film the new one.

Rising star

Nyck de Vries: The Dutchman, aged 24, is basking in the afterglow of becoming F2 champion with a round to spare, in a season in which his longtime McLaren junior driver status has also come to an end.

De Vries entered the racing car with a great reputation following back-to-back World Karting Championship wins. Formula Renault titles in 2014 did not prove to be a harbinger of further single-seater success – until this season, when partnering with Lewis Hamilton's old Grand Prix team, he burned through F2.

De Vries will now be joined by fellow ex-McLaren driver Stoffel Vandorn as Mercedes works as a Formula E driver as the automotive giant debuts its all-electric single-seat car series.

Great racing cars

McLaren M23, 1973-1978: Formula 1 teams today design, build and race a car in one season and then send it to a museum. Back in 1973, McLaren built an F1 car that was still on the grid six years later.

The classic wedge-shaped Gordon Coppuck on the M23 won a total of 15 Grands Prix over four seasons and carried Emerson Fittipaldi and James Hunt to world titles in 1974 and 1976 respectively. Hunt still managed a second place finish in one early in 1977 and the M23 survived into another season as the Chassis Caper in which future three-time champion Nelson Piquet recorded his first F1 finish.
