As with any new console, we imagine you're wanting to know a little more about the console before you put your money down. So in addition to finding the best Nintendo Switch Bundle deals, we're going to help bring in answers to burning questions.
What are the joy-con controllers?
The Joy-Con controller is actually two controllers that attach to the sides of the Nintendo Switch when not in use or when you're playing tablets from your TV. When playing Nintendo turn on the TV, you can remove them and play with one in each hand. The left hand receives the controller with an analog stick and D-pad, the right hand handles one with a second analog and the usual A, B, X and y buttons. Or you and a friend can use one at a time in multiplayer games with the doubling joystick as an impromptu button.
You get a pair with the console, but you might want to buy more to allow additional players to get involved in games like Mario Kart 8, FIFA 19 and more. Or maybe you just like different colors for your own use.
What is a joy-con grip controller?
The Joy-Con Grip is an optional accessory that connects two Joy-Con controllers together, forming something a little more solid for you to hold thanks to an extra long grip and a plastic block between the two sides. The square size form factor may remind gamers of the older generation of the Dreamcast console controller, while everyone else will think it resembles a weird dog snout. Nintendo provides in the box with the Nintendo Switch so you don't have to buy separately. This is not a charging controller, although it does not have a battery.
You don't really Need Nintendo Switch Pro controller to play any game, so do not feel pressured to buy. The Nintendo Switch Pro Controller is a more traditional pad and launched alongside the Nintendo Switch. Prices are not cheap though, starting at around $69.99/£64.99. There is no sign of the Nintendo Switch Console Premium Edition being included either.
Do I need to buy additional controllers for multiplayer on the Nintendo Switch?
Probably no! Remember how Joy-con divides the regulator into two? Turn them sideways and you get two base controllers, each with its own analog stick and D-pad buttons acting as the face feature on the left controller. We've seen the NBA 2K series, Tailor Clips, FIFA 19, and Mario Kart use this method for local multiplayer in both docking and tablet modes. This way you get multiplayer functionality right out of the box, with no additional purchase required.
However, if you want to play four players, then you'll need to invest in an extra pair of joy-con controllers or pro controllers. We bought the Joy-Cons as a pair (see comparison chart above), you will save some money compared to buying them individually. Better yet, if your friends own a Switch, ask them to bring their own controllers to the party!
