SMS update RVS is now available for all Android users in the US

You may have heard of RCS or rich communications services: it's an update to the SMS protocol that Google is trying to make more widely accepted, and live now for all Android users in the US, on any carrier.

The news has been confirmed by Google set of telecommunications lead him sanaz Ahari on Twitteralthough you may need to update both Google's default Messages app for Android and the carrier services on your phone to get the functionality.

RCS is already living in the UK and France. As for the rest of the world, Ahari told users to "stay tuned" for when the technology could roll out even further. In terms of support, Google is ahead of schedule.

Initially opting to let carriers control roll out RK, over the past 12 months Google has reversed course and pushed itself to upgrade messaging using its own servers and infrastructure to include upgrades on PBC-ready phones.

What is RVS?

RCS is developed by a mobile device company, not Google, although Google is working hard to make it the default on Android phones. It replaces the old standard SMS with something closer to what today's messaging apps can give you.

This means better support for large media files, inscribed scores, reads and group chats are easier to manage. SMS has served us well since smartphones arrived, but this is now very outdated.

VSK can also work over Wi-Fi as well as cellular networks, and uses your data, not your text allowance. Unlike rivals such as iMessage and WhatsApp, RCS chats are not end-to-end encrypted so third parties can potentially view your messages.

As more countries and more phones get RBC support, SMS should finally be pushed out, though it will only work for phone communication if Apple has a change of heart and decides to support it on the iPhone.
