When Star Wars: The Rebellion ends with Skywalker and Rey defeats Emperor Palpatine, her, uh... grandfather, she hears the voices of a Star Wars Jedi from yesteryear. You'll probably recognize some of them, like Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ewan McGregor or Frank Oz Yoda - but there are so many Jedi talking at once that you're unlikely to appreciate all of these cameos on first viewing. As a movie it's overblown with fan service, it's one of director JJ Abrams' best touches.
Luckily, since the movie was released, the eagle eye of the audience has cut off the credits, and now we know who they all are. Below we break down who all the voices of the Jedi are in Star Wars: the rise of Skywalker, and among them some very deep cuts from Star Wars lore. It's a treat if you're a fan of the animated Star Wars series in particular.
Here's a quick look down:
- Liam Neeson as Qui-Gon Jinn
- Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi
- Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker
- frank oz yoda
- Samuel L. Jackson as Mace Windu
- Freddie Prinze Jr. as Kanan Jarrus (Star Wars: Rebels)
- Ashley Eckstein as Ahsoka Tano (from Star Wars: The Clone Wars/Action)
- Angelica Perrin as Adi Gallia (from The Phantom Menace, The Clone Wars and Jedi Force Battles on PSone)
- Jennifer Hale, Ayla Secura (from Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith, Star Wars: The Clone Wars)
- Olivia D'Abo as Luminara Unduli (from "Attack of the Clones" and "The Clone Wars")
Note that some of these characters were portrayed by other actors in live action. Adi Gallia was played by Jean Clark, for example, and Ayla Secura was played by Amy Allen.
This sequence is one of the most detailed bits of fanservice in cinema to date. While, for example, the animated Rebels series is said to be heavy in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story - you can see the ghost ship's crew in the Battle of the Scarif - here we see more direct references.
Ahsoka Tano died, according to Skywalker's height
This caused some controversy among Star Wars fans. Ahsoka Tano, a fan favorite character from the Clone Wars and Rebels animated series, is confirmed dead by the rise of Skywalker, assuming all of these voices are power ghosts (the rest, so there's no reason to assume Ahsoka isn't). Perhaps the end of her story is being saved for a future Star Wars project.
It's still nice that she has a little moment in the live-action films.
