Apple Maps gets a major visual overhaul in the fight against Google Maps

Apple still hasn't given up on Apple cards. For a long time, Apple Maps was terrible, but the latest update could bring more with Google Maps. The map visual gets an overhaul, while apple adds more data and improves accuracy, according to her press release.

The changes are rolling out first in parts of the US, available right away, but will also be heading to Europe in the coming months. Users who update will see a visually improved map of the US immediately.

The biggest improvement you will see is how much more detail is shown on the map. Before, you'll get roads, highways, and businesses displayed, but now, you'll see individual buildings, including residences, as well as various land types to help you more easily see parks, airports, malls, and more. You'll get even more real-time transit data, too, just like Apple, but with Miami data added.

Required Updates

Considering these updates basically serve to bring the features of Apple Maps in line with what's on Google Maps, they feel like all the necessary updates are more exciting new features.

But, Apple is putting a special emphasis on privacy with Apple's latest map update. Apple notes that Apple cards are "not associated with an Apple ID in any way". Some special processing, as suggested by the time of departure, is performed directly on the device, rather than communicating with a remote server.

Going further, Apple notes that random IDs are used when you enter search terms, you navigate, route, or check traffic information, and that these IDs are constantly reset. Apple Maps' privacy policy limits the location information stored, rather than storing a "history of what was searched for or where the user was."

So, while the update is likening Apple Maps to Google Maps in some good ways, Apple has tried to point out that privacy makes it different.
