Volkswagen R Golf Electric Car Concept Makes Ice Racing Debut

Volkswagen will unveil the all-electric, all-wheel-drive Golf R concept car, showcasing the technology that will form the basis of future electric vehicles from the R Efficiency brand, at GP Ice Racing in Austria this weekend.

The car will be one of the motorsport based Volkswagen cars performed in a showcase event that takes place around the ice circuit at the ice airfield in Zell am See. But while other cars include a record-breaking ID R showroom car and a number of beetles, the Golf R concept is described by Volkswagen Motorsport boss Sven Smits after suggesting "a future view."

No technical details of the concept have yet been released, with Volkswagen simply saying that it "serves as an ambassador for future sports cars for the Volkswagen R".

The car appears in the TCS Golf Touring shell, albeit with a new electric all-wheel drive. Volkswagen had previously developed a powertrain for the 671bhp twin-engine ID R car dealership by running it in the TCO Golf, and it's possible that this is an upgraded version of this car. It's also unlikely that any electric powertrain performance will be in the running or golf competition, with VW targeting its ID line for full electric vehicles.

Volkswagen, which only manages full electric motorsport projects in the future, including the continuation of the EID R project. This car has already delivered new Frank or electric entries at Pikes Peak, Nurburgring, Goodwood and China's Tianmen Mountains.

Along with this, Volkswagen has terminated support for the TCS tin-top golf course and the pursuit of electric motorsports support programs based on the new electric meb chassis used for the upcoming line of ID cars. Volkswagen Chief Technical Officer Frank Welch previously said that "meb in the future will be the second production-related component in Volkswagen's motorsport program."

It is believed that the concept car at GP Ice Racing will be previewing a potential powertrain for a future ID 3 based electric racing car that could be launched in the upcoming e-TCO electric discharge. The transmission could also be adopted on the much-discussed ID R line of high-performance road cars that the firm is currently considering.

Volkswagen is the first step into the hot electric road car, which is being introduced with ID 4 monitors, which will be introduced alongside the regular version of the electric SUV later this year.

Not every Volkswagen car will be demoed at this weekend's GP Ice Racing looking to the future. The firm also presents the historic 1302 with the 'Salzburg' Beetle and the American rallycross titled R Beetle.

Bentleys will also be featured at the event by launching the GT W12 Continental into racing on ice.
