You season 3: release date, cast and what we know about Netflix drama's return

There's something oddly interesting about you on Netflix. Loosely adapted from a series of books by American writer Caroline Kepnes, You Lets Us Into the obsessive thoughts of a lovelorn psychopath, Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley).

But, Joe's records lead to problems: he is vulnerable to developing unhealthy urges with each of his partners, leading him to do wild things to get their attention. In the first two seasons of the show, we saw him lie, manipulate and even kill his way into the hearts of unsuspecting victims. Regardless, we can never look away.

A show with a subject like this should be more controversial, but you still found your audience. The second season was watched by 54 million in its first month on the streaming service, alone (well, at least a couple of minutes of episode one, anyway).

You season 3 has been confirmed for January 14th and production has already started on it, with its extension for one more series helping the production tax credit more $ 7 million. Below, we'll break down when Season 3 is on Netflix and summarize everything you need to know about the next episodes.

You season 3 release date: expected in 2021

Netflix hasn't confirmed an exact you season 3 release date, but when the news of the relaunch broke into TVLine, 10 new episodes have been revealed coming in 2021. The official Twitter page for the show posted a tongue-in-cheek video in early January, simply stating "New Year, New You", a witty play on pseudo-self-cultivation comments in the second season of You.

Even better news for the fans, production has officially started in the third chapter. On the twitterproducer Sera Gamble confirmed on Friday, February 7th that work has begun on You season 3. "Just thought you might want to know," Gamble wrote.

While this essentially dooms viewers a whole year before they can check out Back to Joe and Love, it's good to know that the new season is certainly coming in an era where Netflix wasn't afraid to cancel its original show.

You Season 3 Cast: Joe and Love Returns

While there's no word yet on when production will begin on Season 3, we do have confirmation of two returning cast members: Badgley will return to Jo and Victoria Pedretti will return as love.

The constant presence of love in life Joe was pretty sure given the way the second season ended, with the couple being very harmful (more on what the twist means for season 3 below). Hopefully we'll see the return of the extended Quinn family and friends from season 2 as well.

It is likely that you will continue to be set in Los Angeles for the foreseeable future. With previously mentioned tax breaks for California productions, and the second season finale, which saw Joe adjust to life in an idyllic country house, it's safe to assume that Season XNUMX won't be relocating like a two-shift season from New York to Los Angeles.

You Season 3 Plot: What to Expect Next Year

Season 2 You dramatically stepped up the melodrama, diverging from the books with a rather shocking character to reveal. When Love is forced to confront Jo's true nature on her first victim, Candace, she delivers the news in a way few people have seen - stabbing Candace in the throat.

It was a mind blowing moment, revealing that love is like a neurosis and prone to murder like Joe. Speaking at entertainment tonightBadgley offers some insight into the show's gender politics, analyzed through Joe's rejection of his partner's grim tendencies.

“… it’s like, ok, yes, theoretically they are the same – but then he denies it, which again brings up the archetypes of man and woman and the oppression of women, the inequality of men and women,” Badgley says. He further hints at a deeper look at love in the third season, noting that she: "...she doesn't seem to be the same person, she doesn't seem to be the same predator."

It's not just love that the three season plan to question more carefully. Sir Gamble's showrunner is planning an even darker future for Joe, too. In an interview Hollywood Reporter, Gamble talked about how the season 2 ending doesn't show good things for our protagonist.

On a wave of murderous love revelations, she also surprises Jo with the message that she is now carrying his child, securing her future with him (for now). We see the two move to the suburbs (with the Mother of God in tow), and it's here that Joe spies his new neighbor over the fence - a possible new subject of his obsessive nature.

"I think the most important thing for me is that the last scene is just this confirmation that Jo is Jo," Gamble says, "in a way that won't be good for Jo." What drives Joe, and how it makes us feel about his actions, was clearly a visionary escapade over two seasons that saw an extensive dive into both Joe's traumatic childhood and love. Although their stories are very different, we learn that both have experienced physical and emotional abuse, and have also committed acts of violence at a very young age.

The ending was designed for a "much more suburban, island world" setting where Joe would be a complete fish out of the water. How Joe handles fatherhood will be an interesting element next season - the last two seasons have shown him to be especially protective of the children in his life.

Badgley told TVLine that Joe and Love are "not kindred spirits. He is afraid that her at the end. Basically, it's set for season 3 in a way where they'll be each other's nemesis arcs.” That's a lot of potential material for season 3 to explore.

You can run for another season on Netflix

Joe's story doesn't have to be bundled with Season 3, either. "I'm not afraid to say that we could definitely follow Joe for several seasons," Gamble told Chet. Don't worry about writers running out of ways to test your characters, either. "Because we believe in the world that Caroline has given us and we believe in these signs, we just know that they will continue to find really wrong things to get into."

You are a one of a kind show

No matter where Joe's romance takes off and love takes us on, Netflix clearly has the gloating smash at his fingertips. Author Caroline Kepnes is currently working on books three and four in her You series, which means Season 3 of You is facing Game of Thrones-style dilemma ahead of the source material.

You are only fresh, sexy and somewhat dangerous. He takes incredible complicity in the monstrous acts seen in the TV series Hannibal, and it fits perfectly with the millennial biting satire. Naturally, disputes began over its dark subject, but the risk has already managed to move the show's themes with a deft touch, giving the audience a twisted and compelling show.

Bring on season 3.
