Canon EOS R5 will shoot cinema-class 8K at 30fps, 4K at 120fps

We already knew that a new Canon EOS R unit was coming, the R5, but now Canon has released more moments of detail on just what this full-frame camera system can do.

And it's all about the skill of capturing video with image stabilization. Capable of shooting 8K at up to 30 frames per second, this is the kind of system that will be used in high-end productions. This shows that the canon is, in part, crossing over what it offers to the PRO market - there is an overlap here in what you'll find in the company's EOS S range, for example.

So what about the nuances of the Video R5 will it do? Here is the summary:

  • 8K 4:2:2 10-bit magazine canon (H.265) or 4:2:2 10-bit HDR VU (H.265)
  • 4K up to 120fps 4:2:2 10-bit magazine canon (H.265) or 4:2:2 10-bit HDR-VU (H.265)
  • 4:2:2 10-bit magazine canon or 4:2:2 10-bit HDR-PQ output via HDMI at 4K 59,94 fps
  • 5-axis optical image stabilization, allowing lens and camera ibis to be combined
  • Dual Card Slots: 1x CFexpress, 1x Data LED (UHS-II)

All video modes will be compatible with the company's dual pixel CMOS AF for autofocus. There are also animal recognition AF, dogs, cats and birds, in addition to recognition.

Overall, given the ability to shoot 12 frames/frames, this is starting to sound like the more expensive EOS R unit that Canon has been hinting about since the start of the product line.
