Biker+: specs, price, release date, everything you need to know

It's been a long, long time since Motorola threw its hat into the premium flagship ring. Sure, we were on Friday to tickle our nostalgia, and Moto mods needed 5g first, but it's been years since the real top Moto stack ruled the roost.

Well, now it's time for Motorola to come back with fists swinging. Hello biker+. Here's everything you need to know.

Differences

  • Both devices: 6.7-inch OLED screen, 21:9 aspect ratio, 90Hz
  • Edge+: HDR10+ / Edge: HDR10
  • Edge+: 5,000 mAh battery / Edge: 4,500 mAh
  • Edge+: 108MP main camera / Edge: 64MP main camera
  • Edge+: 5G mmWave and optional 6GHz / Edge: 5G sub-6GHz only
  • Edge+: Qualcomm SD865 processor, 12GB RAM / Edge: SD765, 6GB RAM

Well, the first thing to know is that there are actually two devices out there: the standard edge and the almighty edge+.

  • Biker vs Biker+: What's the difference?

This little "plus" symbol is the last mighty important as it means you'll pay a lot more money and get a bunch of extra features. We summarized them at once key points. The main feature below will focus on the outskirts+ model.

Display

  • 6.7" 'infinite edge' curved OLED display
  • Full HD+ resolution (1080 x 2400)
  • Refresh rate 90Hz
  • 21:9 aspect ratio

While phones aren't as ultra-wide as they used to be (phew), Motorola has sometimes held its own with very narrow displays, at 21:9 aspect ratios. This is exactly what you get with Edge+. This will make it easy to hold in one hand, but very tall given its 6.7-inch diagonal measurements, which we're not sure makes complete sense.

The most interesting thing about the display is what Motorola calls 'infinite edge'. Others would call it a waterfall display. Or Display Overflow. This is where the screen curves around the edges to give the impression of zero on the bezel side. Edge+ uses this to control swipe, too, if you wish, or you can turn it off entirely to avoid the possibility of accidental touches. We like that there is a choice.

While Motorola hasn't opted for going high resolution, we suspect it will balance well with battery life. The same can be said for the upgraded fare: The 90Hz panel here offers an increase in smooth scrolling compared to many current panels, but not at 120Hz like the Divorce or 144Hz land like Red Magic. We don't think that's a lot of questions since most don't see a huge benefit for apps and games.

Камеры

  • Triple rear camera system:
    • Main: 108-megapixel, 1/1.33 sensor, f/1.8 aperture, optical image stabilization (OIS)
    • Zoom: 3x optical, 8MP, 1/2.25V, f/2.4, OIS
    • Wide (117 degrees) and macro: 16 megapixels, f/2.2 aperture
  • Punch-hole camera, 25MP
  • Video 6K up to 30 fps
  • 120 fps slow-mo

The defining part of any phone these days is the camera. And Motorola isn't holding back by adopting the same large-scale ultra-high-resolution sensor in the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra. What to say: it's 108-megapixels. Yes, one hundred and eight, which is like taking eight 4K TVs and stacking them side by side. There that a lot of resolution on it is much more than a normal sensor.

However, Motorola is using this resolution in various ways. Basically, thanks to Quad pixel technology it takes four pixels and compresses them into one, oversampling, thus delivering better quality in a still massive 27-megapixel result. Or you can activate full resolution if you so desire. It also influences the magnification capability by providing data that is used in conjunction with other optics to refine results.

Because being 2020, Edge+ certainly comes with more than one camera. Indeed, there are three on the back. That massive 108MP main sensor, along with 3x optical zoom at 12MP and wide-angle and macro at 16MP. We're happy to see a larger resolution offering for macro finally, as Motorola's previous 2-megapixel implementation was poor.

Hardware specifications

  • 5,000 mAh, TurboPower wired (18W) and wireless (15W) fast charging
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor, 12GB RAM (LPDDR5)
  • 5G connectivity: millimeter wave and optional -6GHz
  • Water repellent design (not IP rating)
  • Stereo speakers sound waves
  • In-Display Fingerprint Scanner
  • 256 GB (UFS 3.0)
  • Thickness 9,6mm

Under the hood, the Biker+ reads every bit of the flagship, delivering a spec sheet that strikes first at every turn.

This means the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 865, coupled with 12GB of RAM (DDR5). That means 256 GB (with ultra-fast UFS 3.0).

This also means Wi-Fi at 6 and 5G connectivity (both pr.mm and sub-6GHz). This basically means that this is the fastest connected phone you can put your hands on, at the time of writing. It's bold for the future, as it's rare to find a millimeter wave tube - and that probably goes some way towards explaining the price of this device.

There's also a huge 5000 mAh battery under the hood, which we'd expect to last a single day of use - even if you're shipping stuff with a lot of apps. Such a battery and thin screen ratio is because it is thicker than conventional devices though, at 9,5mm.

Yes, and there is a 3,5mm headphone jack. A truly rare item for any flagship phone these days.

Software

  • Android 10 operating system
  • My new UB, Moto app

On the software front, Motorola has always been good at Google's Android operating system, not fiddling with it too much. As such, it looks clean and clean. What Moto consistently add to their devices, though, is the Moto app.

Biker+ is a little different: it's a Moto app as you may know it, but access to what Motorola calls my UB, with the ability to plug into settings to customize themes, styles and fonts the way you want. There are also sections for Moto Display, Moto Actions and Moto Drives (as first seen in the Moto G8 Power) to deal with the corresponding always-on screen, physical actions, return function activation, and DNR game space.

Release date and price

  • Biker+: €1199 / Release date: May 2020
  • Biker style: €599 / Release date: May 2020

So, the main question is: how much will all this cost? - It is not cheap. Biker+ will cost €1199.

Biker style (i.e. not a plus) is much smaller, priced at €599. You lose a 108MP camera, 5G mmWave, HDR10+, and a top processor manufacturer, but the screen is otherwise the same type, scale, and resolution - which might make it the more obvious choice for many.
