How to choose and when to change brake pads for cars

Brake pads are one of the main elements of the vehicle's braking system, actively interacting with the rim and creating braking acceleration. Without serviceable pads, it is simply life-threatening to get under way. Their service life cannot be accurately identified, it will depend on the operating conditions of the car, your driving style and other external factors. Brake pad types

  • Semi-metallic. They are distinguished by increased wear resistance and durability, as they consist of a metal component by 30-70%. As a rule, it is a graphite, iron or copper powder mixed with various modifiers and ingredients binders.
  • Organic or HAO. Based on the name, it is clear that such pads are less durable and wear out faster. They may contain glass, rubber, carbon, Kevlar and high temperature resin.
  • Low-metal LLW. The formula here is very similar to organic ones, only a metallic component (10-30%) is added to improve heat transfer and provide better braking.
  • Ceramic. Despite being made of ceramic, these brake pads are incredibly durable. Their wear resistance is increased by non-ferrous metal filler.

With regard to the method of operation and design features, brake pads are divided into only two types: disc and drum. Disk ones are much more efficient, but they also cost an order of magnitude more expensive. That is why drum brakes are still more common.

When to change pads

You don't have to wait for the check engine light to come on. Experienced motorists visually determine the degree of pad wear, even if they do not make any sound while driving. If you do not have sufficient experience, then the first signal is the vibration of the brake pedal. The vehicle may deviate from the intended course during braking, or a slight whistle may be heard intermittently. For most vehicles, the minimum brake pad friction layer thickness is 2mm without base (6-7mm with base). When in doubt, you can always call a car service and ask the mechanics to assess the condition of the pads. The service is cheap, but you will be 100% sure that the brakes will not fail at the most crucial moment.
