Car insurance is mandatory for all vehicle owners, so it applies to almost everyone who owns a car. In total, there are two types of policies in Russia: OSAGO and CASCO. To understand the differences, you need to know what each type of insurance is.
Car insurance for traveling abroad can be a real salvation in case of an accident abroad.
OSAGO
MTPL insurance - a category that is mandatory for all vehicle owners. This type of insurance covers damage caused by the driver to another participant in the accident. The main features of OSAGO are described below.
Payout limit
At the moment, there are limits on receiving insurance payments. Damage to life and health is not more than 500 thousand rubles, not more than 400 thousand rubles to compensate for property loss for each participant. If the damage is greater, then the other person responsible for the accident pays the rest of the amount.
OSAGO policy cost
Auto insurance will depend on many conditions:
- region;
- vehicle characteristics;
- the age of the driver and his experience;
- accident-free driving rate.
The policy can be issued for several people, in which case the coefficient of accident-free driving will be calculated for a driver with less experience or a large number of accidents.
Different insurance companies have the right to raise / lower the tariff by 20% of the base value, so sometimes it is better to contact specialists who are familiar with the mechanism for forming the cost of an insurance policy and can tell you how much OSAGO insurance costs.
Refusal to pay damages
OSAGO insurance provides for the possibility of refusal to make insurance payments. These include damage:
- obtained during the competition, testing, training;
- during loading and unloading operations;
- damage to money, jewelry, works of art, antiques that occurred during the accident.
There may be cases when the company pays for the damage, but may require the return of the money spent from the culprit of the accident. This happens if:
- in case of intentional harm;
- the accident occurred due to the intoxication of the perpetrator;
- the guilty person did not have the right to drive the vehicle;
- the driver left the scene of the accident;
- the driver is not in the list of persons admitted to driving the vehicle;
- the insurance policy has expired;
- the insurance company did not send an accident form (in case of self-registration);
- the car was not delivered for inspection;
- false information was provided at the time of signing the contract.
These are the main reasons why an insurance company may refuse to issue money.
Service selection
The vehicle is repaired in the service, with which the company enters into an agreement, at the rates indicated in the directory. The location of the center should be no more than 50 km from the location of the car.
Damage is also calculated in accordance with the handbook. These publications are updated every six months. There are no restrictions on the manufacturer of spare parts in the publication, therefore third-party products or original spare parts can be used for repairs.
Payment of damages in case of bankruptcy of the company
In case of bankruptcy of the company that issued the insurance policy, the car will be repaired at the expense of the reserve fund of the Russian Union of Auto Insurers. This is very important, especially if car insurance is required for traveling abroad.
Obtaining OSAGO online
Obtaining an OSAGO insurance policy can be issued in person, at the office of the insurance company, through a broker or received remotely. This is done simply. The owner of the vehicle enters the website of the company or the union of motor insurers, enters the required data on the car and persons admitted to drive, pays the required amount. To present it to the traffic police, you must have a printout of the received policy. The authenticity of the document can be checked against the database.
Punishment for not having a policy
The Code of Administrative Offenses provides for the following penalties for violators of v. 12.37:
- driving a vehicle by a driver not included in the policy - 500 rubles;
- lack of an OSAGO policy for a vehicle - 800 rubles.
Today, the issue of increasing the size of fines and automating the verification of the presence of a policy by cameras is being resolved.
CASCO
CASCO is insurance for your car against damage in an accident. This is voluntary insurance, except for buying a car on credit. In this case, one of the conditions for issuing a loan is the conclusion of a CASCO insurance contract, because in this way the bank ensures the safety of its money.
Policy cost
Insurance companies that issue CASCO policies each calculate its cost according to their own rules, so prices can vary significantly. When calculating take into account:
- car price;
- prestige of the vehicle;
- psychological portrait of drivers.
The sum insured cannot exceed the value of the car.
Auto Insurance can be concluded for different terms, most often for 1 year.
Company bankruptcy
If the company goes bankrupt, the policy is terminated, but you can try to seek compensation in court, because the company could still have assets. If the insurer did not go bankrupt, but simply lost its license, it is better to demand reimbursement of part of the policy and conclude an agreement with another company.
Franchise
A deductible is the obligation of insured persons to accept part of the losses at their own expense. The amount of the deductible affects the cost of the policy - the larger it is, the cheaper the policy. This allows insurers not to mess with minor breakdowns.
It is divided into conditional and unconditional franchise. Such a deductible is called conditional, when an insured event receives compensation only if a certain amount of damage is exceeded. With an unconditional franchise, the company pays for the damage minus the agreed amount.
Place of repair according to CASCO
There are 3 options for car repair under CASCO:
- payment for the work performed upon completion of the repair;
- repair in the service with which the insured has a contract;
- repair in the service center of the car manufacturer.
The most economical option is repair at a service center with which the insurer has a contract.
Denial of compensation under CASCO
Insurance rules differ for different CASCO insurers, so when concluding a contract, you should carefully read all the conditions. Too many companies refuse to pay damages in the event of:
- creating an emergency by a drunk driver;
- being behind the wheel of a driver who is not included in the list of persons admitted to driving;
- notification of an accident after a certain period of time.
Anti-theft measures may be included. If you need insurance for traveling abroad for a car, you should specify this item in advance in order to draw up an agreement with an extended coverage area.
The difference between CASCO and OSAGO insurance systems
The OSAGO policy compensates for the damage received as a result of an accident to the victims. If the accident occurred through the fault of the policyholder, then the damaged car will be sent for repair, and the person responsible for the accident will restore the vehicle at his own expense. This type of insurance is designed to reduce the burden of paying damages to those injured in an accident. The guilty person will not have to pay huge sums for the treatment of the victims and the repair of their car - this will be done by the insurance company, which will check the actual amount of damage and the validity of the claims.
CASCO is designed to compensate for damage to the owner of the vehicle. He will be able to restore his car and he will not have to look for money for repairs.
Here are the main reasons why you need auto insurance. The discussion about which insurance system is better is wrong. CASCO and OSAGO are complementary systems that allow you to reduce losses resulting from accidents.
