Topics on X (formerly Twitter) haven’t gone anywhere: as of October 2026, X’s Help Center still explains how to follow and unfollow them. On x.com, open the list via the More icon → Topics; in the iOS and Android app, tap Topics in your profile menu. From there you can also move Topics you don’t want into the Not Interested category.

Below is a step-by-step guide to tuning your timeline: following and unfollowing, “Not interested” feedback, interests X has assigned to you on its own, muted words, Lists, and choosing between the For you and Following timelines. Menu names come from X’s English Help Center; the app may label some items slightly differently.

Topics are subscriptions to a subject of conversation: a sport, a game, a team, a technology. Once you follow one, you see related posts, events and ads. X picks Topics based on the volume and health of conversations: it counts posts, reposts, replies and likes, and finds related posts with machine learning, algorithms and keywords. It tries to keep posts with manipulated or spammy engagement out of Topics.

Trends show what people are talking about right now. An algorithm picks them too: by default, based on who you follow, your interests and your location. You can’t follow or unfollow a trend — you can only change the location it’s picked for.

Follow the Topics you want

X shows Topic suggestions in your Home timeline, in search results and in your profile menu — not all the time, but when it sees fit. Tap Follow next to a suggested Topic. To pick Topics yourself:

  1. On x.com, click the More icon, select Topics, and click Topics again in the popup. In the iOS and Android app, open your profile menu and tap Topics.
  2. The Topics you already follow appear here. To add more, tap Follow next to a Topic you like.

X may also match you with similar Topics on its own, based on your profile and activity, such as the posts you view or like.

Result: The Topic appears in your followed list, and related posts, events and ads show up in your timeline.

Unfollow Topics you don’t need

You can unfollow from your timeline or from your Topics list:

  1. In your timeline, find a post about a Topic you follow, tap the icon at the top of the post and select Unfollow.
  2. Or open Topics as in the previous step and tap the button next to the Topic you don’t want.

Your Topics menu shows up to 100 followed Topics at a time. The full list — together with Topics X thinks you’re interested in based on your profile and activity — is in your account data (step 4).

After you unfollow, posts on the Topic may still show up occasionally: X takes into account that you keep liking, posting or reposting about it.

Result: The Topic disappears from your list, and X stops suggesting content because you followed it.

Mark Topics you’re not interested in

In your Topics list, tap the button next to a Topic you don’t want — it moves to the Not Interested category. If you change your mind, you can follow it again.

When X suggests a Topic in your Home timeline or on the Explore tab, tap Not Interested right in the prompt.

For recommended posts in the For you timeline, there are “Not interested in this post” and “Not interested in this Topic” options — look for them in the post menu. X uses this feedback as a signal to show you less of that kind of content.

Result: X will recommend the Topics you marked, and similar posts, less often.

Remove unwanted interests from your X data

Besides the Topics you follow, X assigns interests to you on its own, based on your profile and activity. You can review and remove them.

In the iOS and Android app:

  1. In your profile menu, go to Settings and privacy → Privacy and safety.
  2. Below the Data sharing and off-X activity section, tap Ad preferences, then See your X data.
  3. If asked, enter your username or email, then your password, and tap Confirm.
  4. Tap Interests and ads data, then Interests from X.
  5. Deselect the interests that don’t fit you.

On x.com: open Interests from X in your X data and deselect what you don’t need. On the Known For tab of the same page, you can deselect Topics you don’t want to be featured in.

After that, X won’t use the removed Topic to personalize your experience or suggest it to you unless you search for it yourself. You may still see posts about it if people you follow are talking about it.

Result: The interests you remove stop shaping your recommendations — not instantly, but after a while.

Mute words and hashtags

If what bothers you is not a whole Topic but specific words, names or hashtags, mute them. Posts containing them disappear from your Home timeline, notifications and replies. Where to find the list:

  • iOS: Notifications tab → gear icon → Muted → Muted words → Add.
  • Android: Notifications tab → gear icon → Muted words → plus icon.
  • x.com: More → Settings and privacy → Privacy and safety → Mute and block → Muted words → plus icon.

The rest is the same on every device:

  1. Type the word or hashtag — one entry at a time.
  2. Choose where to mute it: in your Home timeline, in Notifications, or both. For notifications, you can choose From anyone or From people you don’t follow.
  3. Set the duration — Forever, 24 hours, 7 days or 30 days — and tap Save.

Muting isn’t case-sensitive: muting “CATS” also mutes “cats”. Muting a word also mutes its hashtag, and to mute mentions of an account, put the @ sign before the name. Such posts still show up in search, but X won’t suggest them in recommendations — on X or by email.

Result: Posts with those words disappear from your timeline and notifications for the period you chose.

Build Lists and pin them to Home

A List shows posts only from the accounts on it. That’s a way to follow a subject on your own terms — for example, only the clubs and sports reporters you trust. X also adds recommendations from Lists you follow to your For you timeline.

  1. Open Lists: in the app, via your profile icon; on x.com, in the navigation bar.
  2. Tap the new List icon (on x.com, Create new List), enter a name of up to 25 characters that doesn’t start with a number, plus a description. Lists are public by default, so anyone can follow them; make yours private if you want it visible only to you.
  3. Add accounts. On x.com, people search opens after you click Next; you can also add any account via the More icon on its profile — you don’t need to follow it.
  4. To turn a List into a tab on Home, tap the pin icon next to it in Lists.

You can follow other people’s Lists too: tap the More icon on the creator’s profile and select View Lists. You don’t have to follow the accounts on the List. Another option is X Communities: dedicated spaces to discuss one subject; you need a public account to join, and a Community’s posts appear in its members’ Home timelines.

Result: The pinned List shows up as a tab to the right of For you and Following.

Choose your Home timeline

There are two tabs at the top of Home. For you shows posts from accounts and Topics you follow plus recommendations, including promoted posts. Following shows only posts from accounts you follow, in reverse chronological order — the non-personalized option.

Switch by tapping a tab or swiping. X remembers your choice: if you close the app on one of the tabs, it reopens there next time.

Result: The Following tab keeps only the accounts you follow, with no recommendations.

How X uses Topics in recommendations

According to X, roughly 500 million posts are published on the service every day, and the algorithm narrows them down to a handful for the For you timeline. Candidates come from your network — the accounts, Lists and Topics you follow — and from accounts you don’t follow.

A neural network then ranks the posts; it is continuously trained on your interactions: likes, reposts and replies. Among the signals, X lists the accounts and Topics you follow, posts you like, posts liked by people in your network and the accounts they follow, as well as interests you chose during onboarding and media you’ve watched. X says no single signal is assigned a greater weight in advance.

Before showing content, X filters out harmful, abusive and spammy posts. Sometimes it explains why you see a recommendation: it shows the name of the Topic, or who in your network follows the author or reposted the post.

Personalized trends are based on who you follow, your interests and your location. If you don’t like them, pick another location:

  • In the iOS and Android app: profile icon → Settings and privacy → Privacy and safety → under Your X Activity, tap Content you see → Explore settings. Turn off Show content in your current location and choose a place in Explore locations.
  • On x.com: click Change in your Trends box — you can Keep tailored trends, pick a nearby location or search for one.

If your city isn’t listed, X isn’t receiving enough posts from there. The Trending tab in Explore shows what’s popular in a specific area and isn’t personalized for every account.

Ads, interests and your data archive

Following a Topic affects ads too: X uses it to personalize posts, events and ads. To stop X from combining your activity on X with data from its ad partners, turn off Personalized ads in Ad preferences. Ads won’t disappear: X can still tailor them using your signup information, your posts, who you follow, your phone type, your location and the links you click on X.

Partners pass some of this data to X through pixels on their websites. On the web, you can also opt out of interest-based ads from X in your current browser with the Digital Advertising Alliance tool at optout.aboutads.info, and privacy-focused browsers cut some of this tracking.

Your data archive shows what X knows about you. It includes your profile, posts, Direct Messages, Lists, the interest and demographic information X has inferred about you, and data about ads you’ve seen. The archive arrives as a ZIP file with HTML and JSON documents.

  1. In the app: Settings and privacy → Account → under Data and permissions, open Your X data. On x.com: More → Your account → Download an archive of your data, enter your password and click Confirm.
  2. Verify your identity with the code sent to your email or phone.
  3. Tap Request data. When the archive is ready, you’ll get an email or a push notification; download it from the link in the email or with Download archive in your settings.

Preparing it can take a few days. Your email must be confirmed, and you need to download the archive in the same browser where you’re signed in to X.

Troubleshooting

  • No Topics item — update the app; on x.com, look under the More icon. Your list of Topics and interests is available in your account data either way (step 4).
  • Posts on a Topic remain after you unfollowed it — X still counts your likes, posts and reposts about it. Remove the Topic from your interests, mute the keywords and wait: changes don’t apply instantly.
  • A muted word shows up in search — that’s by design: muting works in your timeline, notifications and replies, but not in search.
  • Settings on x.com won’t open or save — check that you’re signed in and clear your browser’s cookies and cache.
  • The archive doesn’t arrive — confirm your email address and wait: preparing it can take up to a few days.
  • Your city isn’t in Trends — X gets too few posts from there; choose a nearby location.
