AMD has announced an agreement to buy World Labs, an AI research company led by Fei-Fei Li. The all-stock deal is valued at about $8.2 billion and is expected to close by the end of the year once the usual conditions are met.
What World Labs does
World Labs develops models that build and understand three-dimensional environments from images, video and other data. This approach is often called spatial or “physical” AI: a model has to take into account not only text but also the shape of objects, distances and how they interact in the real world.
Such technologies can be useful for robotics, simulators, design, games, manufacturing and driver assistance systems. It is not a ready-made home robot but a foundation for software that needs to find its way around a space.
Why it matters for AMD
AMD is getting more than a model development team. The company wants to understand better what computing new AI systems will need and to design accelerators, software and server infrastructure for them.
In the AI market, it is no longer just models and chatbots that compete. Chipmakers are trying to tie hardware, software tools and research into a single platform.
What happens next
Fei-Fei Li is set to join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist. Until the deal closes, World Labs will keep operating as a separate company, and the final timing depends on regulatory and corporate procedures.
Ordinary users will not feel the effect tomorrow. But it is deals like this that set the direction for future applications, from generating 3D scenes to training robots in a virtual environment.
