The model is already in Philips’ Ukrainian catalog, but the brand’s store listed no price as of September 22. We couldn’t find this model’s page on Xiaomi’s Ukrainian site, so we don’t list a price.

How to choose an electric toothbrush

The difference between good brushes is smaller than the ads suggest. Check six things before you buy.

• Brushing action. Oral-B’s oscillating-rotating brushes (also called rotation-oscillation brushes) turn a round head back and forth, while sonic brushes from Philips and Oclean vibrate the bristles rapidly. A 2010 Cochrane review (15 trials) could not name a type that cleans better. Oscillating-rotating brushes have the most evidence: the 2014 review included 27 trials of them out of 56, and compared with manual brushes they reduced plaque and gum inflammation in both the short and the long term.
• Pressure control. A sensor warns you when you press too hard — Oral-B and Philips say it protects your gums. The Oral-B iO2 slows down and lights up red, the Sonicare 7100 lights its ring and changes the vibration, and the Prestige 9900 lowers the intensity on its own.
• Timer. The NHS advises brushing twice a day for about 2 minutes, with one of those sessions right before bed. A timer that signals every 30 seconds, like the Oral-B iO2’s, helps you split the time evenly between four parts of your mouth.
• Brush heads. Oral-B recommends replacing the brush head every 3 months, or sooner if the bristles are worn. According to the NHS, medium or soft bristles suit most people. Mind compatibility: iO handles take only iO brush heads.
• Battery and charging. The range is wide: from 14 days for the Prestige 9900 to 65–150 days for the Xiaomi T302. If you travel often, choose a model with a travel or charging case.
• “Ultrasonic” brushes. Oral-B and Philips don’t call their brushes ultrasonic: Philips makes sonic brushes and Oral-B oscillating-rotating ones. The 2014 Cochrane review included 7 trials of ultrasonic brushes, almost four times fewer than for oscillating-rotating ones, so there is little evidence about them.

There is no solid evidence that one type cleans better: that was the conclusion of a 2010 Cochrane review of 15 trials. Choose by feel, pressure sensor, timer and the price of brush heads. For most people, the Oral-B iO6 or the Philips Sonicare 7100 will do.

Does an electric toothbrush clean better than a manual one?
