The Fortress 2 team leaked the source code, and you apparently can get malware while playing

The source code for Team Fortress 2 is apparently leaked, leading to hackers reportedly capable of delivering malware via remote code execution to other players.

This leak was originally reported to @SteamDB on Twitter, with the source code in question built in 2017 and 2018, affecting Counter-Strike: Team 2's source and fortress. site PCGamesN, several community team Fortress 2 server advised players to avoid the game until further notice.

We have reached out to Valve to comment on this situation and we will update this story as soon as we hear anything. However, according to @HeavyUpdateOut on Twitter, "remote code execution, exploits already found." It's important to note, however, that @HeavyUpdateOut is just a fan count, and while it's incredibly popular, you should take the size of this harm with a grain of salt.

So far, neither Valve or Team Fortress 2 twitter accounts have shared any news on the subject, and there have been no posts by the company on their forums or Team Fortress 2 subreddits. Instead of the community taking the lead, from office to TF2 Subreddit User Warning play TF2 or CS:GO before the problem fell apart. This post says "if you don't play any multiplayer servers you're not in danger" - but it might be best to avoid affected games entirely.

We've also been receiving unconfirmed reports that all current Source game engines may be affected, including Harry's mod.

Until Valve comes out and makes a statement or updates the game in some way, it's unconfirmed. But, since this is a potential danger to the security of your data, our advice would be not to play until the problem has been properly addressed by the valve.

We are going to be doing some further investigation on our part as well and will update as soon as we get more information. Until then, perhaps it's time to check out one of the best PC games just to play it safe.

This is an evolving story.

Why is it so dangerous?

We have to confirm that reports of remote code execution in Team Fortress 2 and other Valve games have been unconfirmed. In fact, in that Reddit thread we mentioned earlier, Demoman's mod clarifies that the source code is "an old version and was originally leaked about a year or two ago". And further, that "this unlikely but not out of the question that security flaws such as RPC (Remote Code Execution) exist."

However, the risk of eating disorders in the first place is a rather serious threat. Through this particularly nasty malware flavor, an attacker can take complete control of your PC and execute any code without your permission.

Wannacry was a fairly large example of a cyberattack enabled through an RPP last year. It was a piece of ransomware that encrypted all files on the victim's PC, demanding substantial payment through cryptocurrencies.

Therefore, even if the RPP is not actively affirmed, the fact that it's even possible in the current state of the game means it's best avoided. If an attacker can remove it, all your data is at risk.
