BMW has expanded and refined its range of modern hybrids – creating a lineup that now includes the 2 Series Active Tourer, 3 Series, 5 Series and 7 Series Sedans, and the X1, X3 and X5 SUVs.

Each offers more electric traction, improved fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions than their predecessors, and gives you more choice to suit your needs. But which model is right for you?

BMW 225xe Active Tourer

The BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is well suited to city drivers who want a vehicle with compact city-clean dimensions and a spacious, family-friendly five-seat interior without compromising the style, technology and driving joy you expect from a BMW.

By adding a large 10kwh lithium-ion battery that delivers up to 32 miles of all-electric driving, the BMW 225xe Active Tourer Plug-in Hybrid is even better for efficient everyday city driving. Interestingly, the BMW 225xe Active Tourer's powerful electric motor power is sent to the rear wheels rather than the front wheels, making it ideal for fun nimble electric-only transmissions on narrow city streets.

On open roads, the rear-wheel-drive electric motor is combined with BMW's 1,5-liter three-cylinder TwinPower Turbo gasoline engine to the front wheels to offer a combination of 224hp and 385Nm. And, when accommodating friends and family, the BMW 225xe has wide rear legroom, while the 400-liter boot capacity can be increased to 1350 liters if you fold down the versatile 40:20:40 split rear seats.

Plug in BMW 330e hybrid

Designed to deliver pure driving pleasure and power-efficient sports sedan style, the BMW 330e takes the style, performance and high-tech premium interior of the acclaimed new seventh-generation 3 Series, and adds a plug-in hybrid engine for even more refined and efficient driving. .

A state-of-the-art 2,0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine with a powerful electric motor and an advanced 12kWh high-voltage lithium-ion battery, the BMW 330e delivers up to 37 miles of whisper-quiet electricity for low-cost, low-impact everyday driving.

On long journeys, the electric and petrol power plants work together, via an eight-speed Steptronic transmission. And, when you find challenging B-road, you can use the full hybrid engine with 252hp and 420Nm of torque-responsive XtraBoost mode, which adds another 40 horsepower. The result is 62 mph in just 5,9 seconds, with dynamic handling and guttural engine note that feels pure BMW.

Plug in BMW 530e hybrid

If you're after a big family plug-in hybrid sedan, the BMW 530e is more than adequate. Series 5 is a four-time winner of what car? A luxury prize car, thanks to its sublime handling that indicates its size and weight, and luxuriously pampered tech-interior. It's also incredibly practical, with plenty of room for rear passengers and room for eight hand luggage in the trunk.

The recently updated plug-in BMW 530e hybrid now features a large capacity 12kWh lithium-ion battery, giving up to 36 miles of fully electric power. You can also choose the 530xe all-wheel drive option, which adds all-wheel drive.

Plug-in hybrid BMW 745e

The BMW 7 Series has reaffirmed its position as the ultimate luxury driving machine with the arrival of the latest flagship saloon development in early 2019. Boasting a bold design and an even more refined interior - with more advanced infotainment and driving technology - it got four stars in a car and what kind of car?

The BMW 745e Plug-in hybrid delivers up to 31 miles of all-electric power with its powerful electric motor, with 265 lb-ft of torque, making it ideal for refined zero-emission urban, and road-going up to 68mph.

When you want to go even further, the 286L 3,0-liter six-cylinder efficient diesel engine works with the electric motor to deliver up to 394hp and 600Nm. The BMW 745e is also available in the long wheelbase 745Le.

BMW X1 xDrive25e Plug-in Hybrid

The BMW X1 may be a more modest-sized model in the BMW SUV line-up, but don't doubt its capabilities - particularly with the recent addition of new advanced eDrive Plug-in hybrid engines of the latest generation of 10kwh lithium-ion batteries that provide up to 32 miles fully electric.

Powered by a 1,5-litre three-cylinder BMW TwinPower Turbo petrol engine, the BMW X1 xDrive25e hybrid develops 220hp and 385Nm of torque for high performance in the city and on the open road.

Inside, the compact BMW X1 xDrive25e city-friendly form is deceptively spacious, with 450 liters of luggage space as standard and 1470 liters with the versatile 40:20:40 rear seats folded down. Later this summer, BMW's sister X2 all-wheel drive 25e Plug-in Hybrid will join the lineup, adding a sleeker and even more stylish edge to BMW's compact Plug-in Hybrid SUV series.

BMW X3 xDrive30e Plug-in Hybrid

The BMW X3 is the perfect mid-size SUV for active and busy people – whether with friends or family. In fact it's now available with a plug-in hybrid engine that can run up to 34 miles on an all-electric stovetop making it even more of an ideal all-rounder.

The 2,0-litre four-cylinder BMW TwinPower Turbo petrol engine and powerful electric motor work together to deliver 252hp and 420Nm of torque on long journeys, which is perfect for even the most tightly packed adventures and weekends – especially with 450 liters of luggage space in the back.

Like the BMW 330e, the X3 xDrive30e is also equipped with XtraBoost, which delivers an extra on-demand 41 horsepower of performance when needed. Combined with an eight-speed Steptronic transmission and intelligent all-wheel-drive, that means a spirited 62-6.1 mph time of XNUMX seconds.

BMW X5 xDrive45e Plug-in Hybrid

If you have a large family and big ambitions, the BMW X5 xDrive45e is the plug-in hybrid SUV of choice. The second evolution of the BMW X5 Show-off hybrid technology combines BMW's plug-in eDrive hybrid technology with a high-capacity 24kWh lithium-ion battery to offer an impressive 54 miles of all-electric range for everyday city driving.

For longer trips, BMW's powerful TwinPower Turbo 3,0-liter inline-six diesel engine runs seamlessly with eDrive hybrid technology's drive module developing a powerful 394hp and 600Nm of torque. Working with dual-axle air suspension and intelligent BMW all-wheel drive it gives a powerful sense of confidence, 0-62mph acceleration in just 5,6 seconds and cosseting refinement, in all conditions

Plus, the luggage compartment boasts an impressive 500 liters as standard – up from 1,720 liters of trunk volume when the rear backrests are folded down. So there's more than enough room for a big family (and grand adventures).
