children of men

Long before a quarter and a month, famed director Alfonso Cuarón (Gravity, Roma) offered a bleak vision for Britain's immediate future as the state's anti-immigration police. The world is plunged into chaos as it is about to disappear after an inexplicable epidemic that has left everyone barren. Although it has been decades since the last human birth, a pregnant refugee named Key (Claire-Hope Ashitey) suddenly appears, leading a desperate rush to deliver a mom-to-be for a human safety project – a group of scientists working on a cure in the world of infertility. The reluctance of the ex-activist turned state lackey Theo (Clive Owen) was initially urged to obtain the necessary transit papers, but it quickly becomes apparent that he is Key's and her child's only hope of making it to their destination alive. The triumph of cinema, children, men is both incredibly touching and incredibly tense. Watch out for a heart-pounding single-player-take scene that sees Theo and Key venture into a war zone in order to get to shore.

Annihilation

Credit: Netflix

If you've seen writer-director Alex Garland's previous sci-fi masterpiece, Ex Machine, you'll know to expect a wild ride with his subsequent Annihilation. Based on the highly regarded novel of the same name by artist Jeff VanderMeer, Annihilation follows a group of women who go on an expedition to an ecological disaster zone where the laws of nature do not apply. Natalie Portman leads the way as a biologist looking for her missing husband, and she's joined by Tessa Thompson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez and others. While the movie was released in theaters in the US, Australia is lucky enough to be one of the countries getting the movie on Netflix right now. No less brainy and scary, Annihilation has all the makings of a modern science fiction classic.

What if you could allow the killings to happen before they happen? More importantly, what would you do if you were to be convicted of a murder you had not yet committed? What is the premise of Steven Spielberg's thrilling sci-fi film, Minority Report. Based on the Philip K. Dick short story of the same name, the film sees Tom Cruise head to the department's futuristic 'program' to stop murderers from carrying out their violent acts. They are able to do this thanks to the psychic powers of three children known as 'seers'. But what happens when this trio of predictors predict a murder by addicts on the cruise itself? Spoiler alert, it works! A visually stunning film that is filled with ingenious and forward-thinking technological ideas that are likely to become a reality in the coming years, Minority's report is saturated.

interstellar

Matthew McConaughey plays an astronaut explorer in Christopher Nolan's Interstellar.

One of Christopher Nolan's most ambitious films, Interstellar imagines a future in which the Earth is on her way out and humanity must travel beyond our galaxy to find a suitable new planet to call home. These astronauts include Cooper (Matthew McConaughey), who must leave his children behind despite a journey that could take several decades, and Brand (Anne Hathaway), who is on a mission to hunt down her partner in boundless space. Simultaneously stimulating and hallucinogenic, Interstellar is a true sci-fi movie - one that rewards multiple viewings.

Before you watch Jordan Peele's latest film, we might want to watch (or revisit) the writer-director's debut facility, Step Out on what is an absolutely brilliant horror film dealing with issues of race relations in America. Upon meeting his girlfriend's white parents for the first time, African American Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) begins to feel a growing sense of unease, especially in the presence of the family's all-black staff. Before too long, the family's seemingly progressive all too accommodating disposition begins to unravel, eventually revealing a terrible truth that will reveal to Chris just what kind of danger he really is. Profound and unsettling in equal measure, come out as one of the most socially relevant horror films ever made. No wonder Peel won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay in his time out of the gate.

Jaws

The movie that defined the term 'blockbuster', Steven Spielberg's classic movie frightened its jaws and sailed its way to service and yearned for more viewers to nibble on. Zodiac

Credit image: Paramount Pictures

Director David Fincher revolutionized the modern serial killer thriller with his masterpiece, Se7en, so when it came time to return the Zodiac genre, the visionary director chose to tear it down again (in a good way, that is). Abandoning the grim gaudiness from the aforementioned film, Zodiac follows the truth (and still unsolved) of the Zodiac murders that took place in the US in the 1960s-70s. Fincher approaches pathological material with journalistic attention to detail and intense investigation that would become incredibly popular a few years later (just imagine how celebrated the Zodiac would be if released now, in a time of all-out true crime obsession). Jake Gyllenhaal plays Robert Greysmith, a real-life newspaper cartoonist who ends up dedicating decades of his life in pursuit of the true identity of the Zodiac killer. The rest of the cast isn't shabby, either - Robert Downey Jr. (not an Iron Man game), Mark Ruffalo (not playing the Hulk), Anthony Edwards, Brian Cox and Chloë Sevigny star in a supporting role. A gripping true story, Zodiac is a must for dedicated true crime enthusiasts. It also makes for a terrific companion to Fincher's serial kill theme on the Netflix original series, Mindhunter.

Gerald's game

Credit: Netflix

2017 has been a great year for Stephen King adaptations (ahem, The Dark Tower aside), and the new Netflix original Gerald's Game will be joined by 1922 in the top tier. In an attempt to rekindle their marriage, Gerald (Bruce Greenwood) and Jesse (Carla Gugino) retreat to a remote lake house. When the sex game goes awry, Jessie is left alone and handcuffed to the bed and overcomes her paranoia and deep, personal demons. Although the movie mostly takes place in one room, Gerald's Game is still gripping from start to finish. She also has one of the best performances of a restaurant career.

The disc is the movie that made him cool to love Ryan Gosling. Based on the novel of the same name by James Sallis, this meaty thriller is one of the most stylish films of the last decade, almost single-handedly reviving the neon '80s synth-pop scene. Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn (Bronson, Only God Forgives), the drive sees Gosling play an unnamed driver who works as a shady carrier at night. When work goes horribly wrong, this "driver" must dispense with violent justice to make things right for those he cares about. The film's enormous impact can be felt in all forms of media – Video Game Hotline Miami, in particular, owes a big thanks to the ride. A love ode to early tough guy crime films by Michael Mann, a must-see drive.

Robbers

The famous bank robbers Bonnie and Clyde have been immortalized in popular culture thanks in large part to the classic 1967 film of their exploits, but is the Act responsible for stopping them from killing? Netflix's new original movie The Highwaymen aims to tell its story once and for all. Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson stars as Frank Hamer and Manny Goh, two Texas Rangers who retire with one goal in mind - to find Bonnie and Clyde and put them down for good. La La Earth

While it will always be remembered as the film that was accidentally read out as best picture at the Oscars in 2017, La La Earth was still a well-deserved winner no matter what. Written and directed by prodigy director Damien Chazelle (Cervical Spine, First Person), the film is an all-singing, all-dancing love story between a jazz pianist (Ryan Gosling) and an aspiring actress (Emma Stone) who struggle to stay together. how to separate their dreams. Dunkirk

Credit: Warner Bros.

A heartbreaking tale of massive survival against all odds, Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk film once again takes on one of the most significant events of World War II, namely the evacuation of over 300 allied soldiers who find themselves stranded in the French port city of Dunkirk without supplies and barely any ammunition, surrounded by heavily armed German troops. Codenamed Operation Dynamo, Winston Churchill's decision to secure every available civilian ship capable of developing Dunkirk resulted in overwhelmingly stranded troops being rescued. Had the scenario gone the other way, the Allies might have lost the war. Following events on land, air and sea, Nolan offers a remarkably intimate view of the evacuation, albeit opposed to the epic backdrop. One of Nolan's best films to date, Dunkirk is a war film that explores human bravery in the face of near-certain death.

good time

Good Time stars Robert Pattinson in a performance that will make you forget all about your involvement in the Twilight saga. We're talking good young De Niro, here. When his mentally handicapped brother stole the police after a bank robbery, Connie (Pattinson) sets out to do whatever he can to free his brother before ending up in the brutal prison of the Rikers Island complex. This sets up with the night, which gets out of control very quickly. Don't predict what will happen next. Dirty and grubby, Good Time is an intense movie with incredible music and fantastic cinematography. One of the best films of 2017.

Beasts no nation

Credit: Netflix

As the first original film on Netflix, Beasts of No Nation had a lot to prove. Lead scenes are traditionally associated with India's low budget and D-class horror films, but with Beasts of No Nation, Netflix has managed to convince people that high quality (dare I say Oscar caliber) films could be streamed at home and shown in theaters at the same time. . Directed by Joji Cary Fukunaga (True Detective season 1), Beasts follows the loss of a soldier's child of innocence as he is forced to do monstrous things. The film hits like a sledgehammer, never shying away from the brutality and horror experienced by this young boy (played masterfully by newcomer Abraham Attah). Equally powerful is the portrayal of Idris Elba as a merciless boy and mean commander. While not a crowd favorite, we hope Netflix continues to bring us brilliant films.

Soon the group is in real danger with some bloodthirsty bandits and they must use their board game problem solving skills to get out of this hairy situation! Stylishly directed and cleverly written, Night of the Night is head and shoulders above most other American comedies released in recent years.

While he quietly blasted himself to the point that he could never lose his virginity, his naughty colleagues (Paul Rudd, Seth Rogen and Romany Malco) made it their mission to get Andy laid down no matter what. And, just when you think you've got the movie sorted out, it reveals itself to be a surprisingly sweet story about friendship and moving on to the next stage of life. With more gut-busting one-liners and sexual misadventures than you can poke... uh... you get where we're going with this, Judd Apatow's 40-Year-Old Virgin is one of the most hilarious comedies of the 21st century.

Like Hardcore Cops

Credit: Universal

Following the success of their classic rom-zoom-com, Shaun Is a Zombie, director Edgar Wright, star and screenwriter Simon Pegg and Nick Frost have teamed up again to bring their hilarious sensibilities to the buddy cop movie genre with the likes of hard cops. London super-cop Nicholas Angel (Pegg) is unwittingly transported to a village in the English countryside for the bosses to look bad by comparison. There, he teams up with dim-witted (but well-intentioned) cop Danny Butterman (Nick Frost) and together, the pair uncover a murder plot. If movies like Bad Boys II are in constant rotation for your spot, you absolutely owe it to yourself to grab some ice cream and watch Hot Hop.

Although they live on the other side of the law, we as humans tend to be fascinated by criminals. Whether it's the criminal lifestyle they lead, or the fact that they're living those who live on the outskirts and do things that most of us wouldn't even dream of, something about their history makes them cinematic gold. Here are some of the best crime movies now streaming on Netflix in Australia.

The wolf of Wall Street

Credit: Roadshow

The characters at the heart of The Wolf of Wall Street can be downright reprehensible with virtually no redeeming qualities, but damn if they don't die laughing. An adults-only tour of the real-life antics of white-collar criminal Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio at his most nutty), the film revels in the excess and debauchery of Wall Street in the 1980s, where thieving yuppies spent millions of dollars on drugs, prostitutes and extravagant imagery do not earn a living on them. While three hours of running the film may scare off potential viewers, Martin Scorsese's energetic direction keeps the action moving at lightning speed. The film also stars Margot Robbie in her breakout role, played by Belfort's constantly tormented wife, Naomi. Jonah Hill is also incredibly funny as Belfort's partner in crime, Donnie. If you love Scorsese's classic Goodfellas, chances are you'll enjoy this one just as much.

John Wick: Chapter Two

In the first John Wick, they killed his dog by sending this Boogeyman-like professional killer (played no better than Keanu Reeves) to the Tireless, where no head was left bullet-free. In John Wick: Chapter Two, our favorite head-to-shooter Hitman is on the defensive as he betrays an old ally and is left to fight off every trigger of happy assassins in New York and abroad. With even more insane stunts and mythology creation than the original film, John Wick 2 is an action-packed mid-chapter that promises to end in an almighty bloodbath for the upcoming trilogy—the closer, John Wick 3: Parabellum.

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol

Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to watch Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol on Netflix until the last movie in the saga, Mission: Impossible: Fallout, hits theaters. Why did you do that? Because the fourth entry in M:Series I, which is directed by animation legend Brad Bird (The Incredibles, Iron Giant) is not only the best to date — it's one of the best spy movies of all time, period. Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his team (which includes Simon Pegg, Jeremy Renner and Paula Patton) must stop a maniac (the late Michael Nyquist) who believes the only way to save the world is to destroy it. Featuring glitzy spy antics, smart gadgets and the best stunts of Cruise's deadly career (seriously, one particular sequence that takes place on the world's tallest building is positively dizzying), Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol is close to perfection, like this kind of movie.

Now, the chase is as Immortan Joe and his party of Warboys reclaim their "property". If Furiosa and co. to succeed, they will need the help of Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy), a wandering road warrior in search of a cause. Director George Miller has created the most dynamic, vibrant and sensational blockbuster action of the decade, Fury Road. it's an inventive, high-octane belly punch in the movie industry that plays it safe for far too long. To do this, he will need help from Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd), an eccentric scientist who has built a working time machine in the form of a DeLorean sports car.
