NVIDIA's New Ultra-Low Latency Mode Technology for GPUs Beats AMD Radeon's Anti-LAG Feature

At the same time with gamescom in 2019, NVIDIA introduced a graphics driver that comes with new technology to compete with AMD Radeon anti-lag for a more flexible game - in addition to a serious increase in the Frame - support for several games.

The Gamescom Game Ready Driver from Nvidia (436.02) adds ultra-low latency which helps reduce lag time.

NVIDIA's new driver update includes an Ultra-Low Latency feature that significantly improves gameplay responsiveness by reducing rendering lag. This mode works on the “just in time” principle, displaying frames on the screen as close as possible to the moment they are needed, which minimizes delays between input (for example, a mouse or keyboard) and display on the monitor.

This is especially useful in fast-paced games, where even a small improvement in response time can make the difference between winning and losing. For example, in Apex Legends at 1080p the latency improvement was up to 29/30 milliseconds with the normal setting down to 19 milliseconds with ultra-low latency.

AMD also introduced its own similar feature called Radeon Anti-Lag, which is claimed to show up to 31% improvement in response time. NVIDIA claims more significant improvements, up to 50% in some cases.

It's important to note that ultra-low latency features work best when the game is running at high frame rates (60-100 FPS) and is GPU dependent. This feature is still in beta and only supports DirectX 9 and DirectX 11 games, and may not be automatically activated in DirectX 12 or Vulkan, depending on the game implementation.

NVIDIA recently released a driver update that promises significant performance improvements in some games. For example, in Apex Legends on GeForce 2080 Super at 1080p resolution, performance increased by 23.4%. GeForce 2070 and GeForce 2060 also showed gains of 16.9% and 15.5%, respectively, which is a significant improvement for these models.

The RTX 2060 Super showed the best performance boost in Forza Horizon 4, increasing FPS by 17.1% at 1080p and 17.6% at 1440p. These changes are especially important for games like Strange Brigade and World War Z, which were benchmarked by NVIDIA.

The driver also includes a new ultra-low latency mode, accessible through the NVIDIA Control Panel under Manage 3D Settings. This mode can be configured globally or on a per-game basis to minimize lag.

Additionally, this update introduces integer GPU scaling, which improves image clarity at high resolutions like Hotline Miami and Terraria on the Turing architecture.

Finally, NVIDIA's new Freestyle filter offers improved image quality and stability over previous filters, with minimal performance hit.
