Smart scales with body composition analysis show more than your weight: they estimate body fat, body water and muscle mass and keep the results in a phone app. We compared six models on sale in 2026: how they measure, which apps they work with and who the makers say should skip body composition readings. The best all-rounder for iPhone and Android is the Withings Body Smart, and the most affordable is the Xiaomi Body Composition Scale S400 at UAH 999.
This list of the best smart scales covers different needs: families, Garmin watch owners, segmental analysis of the arms and legs, and athletes. Prices are as of October 5, 2026. As the makers themselves explain, body composition numbers are best read as a trend, not as a precise diagnosis.
How we picked
- Current models only. The makers still sell all six scales in October 2026. The Garmin Index S2 came out in 2020 and the Withings Body Smart in 2023, but both are still on sale, and the Withings BodyFit was unveiled in June 2026.
- Official specs. The data comes from product pages, manuals and help centers of Withings, Xiaomi, Garmin, RENPHO and Tanita.
- Dated prices. Prices are as of October 5, 2026, from the official Withings, RENPHO and Tanita Europe stores, the official Garmin store in Ukraine and the Ukrainian retailer Citrus.
- Different use cases. An all-rounder, a budget family scale, the Garmin ecosystem, segmental analysis with a handle and an athlete mode.
- Safety. For each model, we note who the maker advises against using body composition analysis.
We did not test these scales ourselves: the list is based on the makers’ data, so it contains no accuracy measurements of our own.

Best for: anyone who wants one scale for the whole household, with an iPhone or Android phone and hands-off syncing.
The Body Smart is the entry-level body composition scale in the Withings lineup and has been on sale since 2023. It estimates body fat and water percentage, muscle and bone mass, a visceral fat index and basal metabolic rate, and it takes your standing heart rate during the weigh-in. Over Wi-Fi, results go to the Withings app even when your phone isn’t nearby, and from there to Apple Health, Health Connect or Google Fit.
What sets it apart from cheaper models is its modes. Pregnancy Mode turns off the current-based measurements for the whole pregnancy and shows your weekly weight gain against average values. Athlete Mode switches to formulas for an athletic build, and Baby Mode lets you weigh a baby in your arms. Withings calculates body composition only for users aged 18 and over. In the Withings EU store, the scale cost €99.95.

The cheapest way to get dual-frequency analysis and profiles for the whole family, as long as you don’t need to send the data to other apps.
- Dual-frequency analysis for UAH 999
- Up to 36 profiles and weighing with a baby
- Guest mode that saves no data
- No Mi Fitness, Apple Health or Health Connect
- Bluetooth only
- 150 kg capacity
Best for: families on a tight budget who are fine with the Xiaomi app and don’t need to export data to other services.
The S400 measures impedance at two frequencies, 50 and 250 kHz; according to Xiaomi, this lets the scale estimate extracellular and intracellular fluid separately. The app shows a report with 25 metrics, while the scale’s display shows your weight, body fat percentage and heart rate. Xiaomi compared its body fat data with DEXA, a dual-energy X-ray scan, and cites a report from Beijing Sport University.
There are 36 profiles: the main Xiaomi account, five invited accounts and five virtual profiles for each of them. People whose weight differs by less than 2 kg have to be picked manually in the app. The main trade-off is that the scale works only with Mi Home / Xiaomi Home: Xiaomi says it is not compatible with Mi Fitness or other apps. At Citrus on October 5, the BHR7793GL model cost UAH 999.

- Data next to your workouts in Garmin Connect
- Wi-Fi and a color screen with a weight graph
- Up to 16 users
- A 2020 model
- No athlete or pregnancy mode
- Everyone needs a Garmin Connect account
Best for: people who train with a Garmin watch and want to see their weight next to workouts, sleep and training load in Garmin Connect.
The Index S2 came out in 2020 and is still Garmin’s current scale: at the official Garmin store in Ukraine, it cost UAH 8,648 on October 5. The scale measures weight, BMI, body fat and water percentage, skeletal muscle and bone mass, and sends the results to Garmin Connect over Wi-Fi on its own. Its color screen shows a one-month weight graph. If you step on in socks, it records only weight and BMI.
The scale tells users apart by weight: besides the owner, up to 15 people can use it, and each of them needs a Garmin Connect account. Guest data is not saved. On Android 14 and later, Garmin Connect shares weight and body fat with Health Connect, one way only. We covered which watch to pair with the scale in our Garmin watch comparison.

- Six zones: arms, legs, torso, abdomen
- Wi-Fi, Apple Health and Health Connect
- Battery lasts up to a year
- No Pregnancy Mode yet
- 2.5 times the price of the Body Smart
Best for: people losing weight or building muscle who want to see which zones are losing fat and where muscle is growing.
Withings unveiled the BodyFit on June 2, 2026. It has a retractable handle with four electrodes, plus four more in the platform. The current passes through the arms, legs and torso, so the scale estimates fat and muscle separately in six zones: each arm and leg, the torso and the abdomen. Instead of standard BIA, it uses impedance spectroscopy at 13 frequencies up to 800 kHz.
The rest matches the Body Smart: Wi-Fi, up to 8 users, Apple Health and Health Connect, but with a rechargeable battery that, according to Withings, lasts up to a year. It has Athlete and Baby modes, and the company promises to enable Pregnancy and Eyes Closed modes later. Withings ran its comparison of segmental analysis with DEXA on the higher-end Body Scan. In the Withings EU store, the BodyFit costs €249.95.

Best for: people who want segmental analysis and the results right on the scale, without opening the app.
The MorphoScan Nova is another handle scale with eight electrodes, but its highlight is a 4.3-inch color screen right on the handle. After a scan, it shows up to 20 metrics, and you switch tabs with the electrodes under your thumbs. The RENPHO Health app has more than 50 metrics, including fat and muscle in each arm, leg and the torso, with no paid subscription.
The scale stores 8 profiles and recognizes users on its own, and it exports data to Apple Health, Health Connect and Fitbit, one way only. It connects over Bluetooth only, and according to RENPHO, the USB-C battery lasts up to 5 months. In the RENPHO US store, the model cost $199.99 on October 5; in Ukrainian stores, look for model number R-MSC04.

For people who train more than 12 hours a week: Tanita’s athlete mode is designed for them, and segmental analysis shows the difference between arms and legs.
- Clearly defined athlete mode
- Segmental analysis and muscle quality
- 5-year warranty
- The most expensive scale here
- Only 4 profiles
- Bluetooth only
Best for: athletes who train more than 12 hours a week and anyone who wants a separate muscle quality score.
Japan’s Tanita describes its athlete mode in more detail than any other maker on this list. According to the RD-545HR manual, it is meant for adults 18 and over who have trained 12 or more hours a week for at least six months, bodybuilders, professional athletes and people who used to train more than 12 hours a week. RENPHO’s own warning shows why it matters: bodybuilders have an unusual muscle-to-fat ratio, and regular scales may not match specialized equipment.
The RD-545HR estimates fat and muscle in the arms, legs and torso at two frequencies and shows muscle quality, metabolic age and heart rate. It stores 4 users plus a guest, runs on AA batteries and sends data over Bluetooth to the MyTanita app. It is the most expensive scale on this list at €499.98 in Tanita’s European store, but it comes with a 5-year warranty. For a training watch to go with it, see our guide to GPS running watches.

How to choose a smart scale
What a scale measures and what it calculates
A scale measures your weight directly with its weight sensors. Everything else is a calculation: a weak current passes through your body, the scale measures the tissue’s resistance (impedance) and plugs it into formulas along with your height, age and sex. That’s why Withings first advises checking these details in your profile: with the wrong height, the percentages will be wrong too.
Water shifts the results the most. When you’re dehydrated, the scale overestimates body fat, and when you have excess fluid, it underestimates it, explain clinicians at Houston Methodist. Tanita adds alcohol, menstruation, illness and intense exercise to the list of factors, while Withings mentions posture and muscle tension, which change the readings by up to 2%.
Why different scales show different body fat
Each maker uses its own formulas and hardware, so numbers from different scales can’t be compared directly. In a 2018 study by Bellafronte and colleagues, even professional analyzers of different types gave strongly related but different results, and the authors concluded that such devices can’t be used interchangeably.
The practical takeaway: weigh yourself on the same scale at the same time of day and watch the trend over a month rather than a single number. Tanita states plainly that under consistent conditions its scales accurately show percentage changes, even if the absolute values differ.
4 or 8 electrodes
Scales without a handle have electrodes only in the platform, usually one in each corner. The current travels from one foot to the other (that’s how Garmin describes its model), so the scale judges your upper body indirectly. Handle scales like the Withings BodyFit, RENPHO MorphoScan Nova and Tanita RD-545HR also have electrodes under your palms, so the current passes through the arms, legs and torso, which makes segmental analysis possible.
Segmental analysis helps if you train and track the balance between your left and right sides, or if you want to see which zones are losing fat. To follow your overall weight and fat trend, a regular scale with electrodes in the platform is enough.
Who makers say should skip body composition
During pregnancy, Tanita and RENPHO recommend using the weight function only, Withings advises turning off current-based measurements (which is what Pregnancy Mode does), Garmin says to consult a doctor first, and Xiaomi says to use the scale with caution. There are age limits too: Withings calculates body composition only from age 18, the Xiaomi S400 for ages 6 to 80, and RENPHO says its scales are not intended for children under 10.
You can still weigh yourself: Withings lets you turn off body fat measurement in the app, and RENPHO suggests stepping on the scale with shoes on so the current doesn’t pass through your body.
Apps, integrations and privacy
Choose a scale that fits your phone: on iPhone, data goes to Apple Health, and on Android, to Health Connect. Google is deprecating the Google Fit APIs in 2026, so on Android look specifically for Health Connect in the specs. On this list, Withings, RENPHO and Garmin support it (Garmin shares only weight and body fat), while the Xiaomi S400 works only with its own app.
Body composition is health data. Xiaomi says results sync to the cloud, RENPHO says backups are stored on its servers, and once you export data to third-party apps, their own policies apply. Before buying, check whether each family member needs a separate account (yes for Garmin; on Xiaomi some profiles can be virtual) and whether there is a guest mode: Garmin and Xiaomi don’t save guest data.
If you already wear a fitness tracker, check which app it uses: our roundup of the best fitness trackers for 2026 can help you find one that pairs well with your scale.
Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, batteries or rechargeable
Wi-Fi scales, meaning both Withings models and the Garmin Index S2, upload results on their own, with no phone nearby. Bluetooth scales need a phone with the app, and the Xiaomi S400 syncs without a phone only through a separately sold Xiaomi Bluetooth gateway.
According to Withings, the AAA batteries in the Body Smart last 15 months on average; they last up to 9 months in the Garmin Index S2 and up to 180 days in the Xiaomi S400. Withings rates the BodyFit battery at up to a year, and the MorphoScan Nova lasts up to 5 months.

FAQ
How accurate are smart scales?
They measure weight in 50–100 g increments, depending on the model. Body fat, water and muscle are not measured but calculated from your body’s resistance, so a single reading can differ from a lab result. Withings says posture and muscle tension change the readings by up to 2% and that the monthly trend is a more reliable way to judge changes.
Why do different scales show different body fat percentages?
Makers use different formulas and hardware: some scales measure only through the feet, others through the hands and feet, at one, two or 13 frequencies. Even professional analyzers of different types can’t be used interchangeably, as a 2018 study in the Journal of Electrical Bioimpedance showed. Compare results only on the same scale.
Can I use a smart scale during pregnancy?
You can weigh yourself, but makers advise against body composition analysis: Tanita and RENPHO recommend weight only, and Withings advises turning off current-based measurements. The Withings Body Smart has a Pregnancy Mode for this: it shows your weekly weight gain and sends no current through your body.
Can I use a smart scale if I have a pacemaker?
Not for body composition: every maker on this list advises against it for people with a pacemaker or other implanted devices, and Withings and Tanita explain that the current may interfere with the implant. You can still use it as a regular scale: Withings suggests turning off body fat measurement in the app, and RENPHO suggests stepping on with shoes on.
When is the best time to weigh yourself on a smart scale?
At the same time and under the same conditions; the makers agree on that, but they recommend different times. Withings suggests within 30 minutes of waking up, Xiaomi in the morning on an empty stomach and Tanita before dinner, while Garmin and Tanita ask you to wait about two hours after eating or exercising.
